Ned Kendall, Ben Mendelsohn, returns to the remote and isolated family home inhabited by his sister Sally Kendall, Rachel Griffiths, to say goodbye to his father Bruce Kendall, Bryan Brown, who is dying. He also brings his fiancée, Toni, Maeve Dermody, who struggles to adjust to the starkness and harshness of rural Australia.

Later, after Ned’s initial refusal to continue, Kate starts a fight by insinuating that Ned made unwanted advances toward her. The tension shifts toward punishment and power dynamics that blur the line between fraternal love and something more troubling. A drunken night out leads to a dam-side encounter where Kate seduces and they sleep together; Ned is overwhelmed with remorse, while Kate remains unfazed, almost indifferent to the fallout of their actions.

The conflict escalates when Bruce orders Ned to accompany Kate to the Christmas dance, a move that forces Ned into a painful confrontation. At the dance, Ned chooses to depart, leaving Kate to go home with Cliff. As Ned drives back alone, he discovers Kate’s dead body in Cliff’s crashed car, and finds that Cliff has hanged himself. He lets Bruce die believing Kate was an innocent, beloved daughter, choosing not to shatter him with what really happened. In the end, Ned confesses to Sally that Bruce died never knowing that she was his greatest achievement, a quiet, brutal culmination of a family’s secrets that have long festered beneath the surface.
