Jackson Alder awakens to a claustrophobic hell inside his Jeep after a mudslide traps him underground. He scrambles to gauge how high the mud has risen by trying to open the window, but soil starts pouring in, and he quickly rolls the window up to keep the car from filling further.
The danger intensifies as the sunroof begins to cave in. He manages to hold it back with tape and a steering wheel lock, all while rationing his remaining water and praying that help is on the way. He marks the moment with a small cross on the back of a seat and in that instant, faith and fear occupy the same tight space.
Water begins to seep through the sunroof cracks. Resourceful and determined, he fashions a funnel from a credit card and positions an empty water bottle beneath the drip. When a camping chair is ripped apart, he attempts to thread a pole through a tiny sunroof hole, but the plan fails; he settles for crumpled newspaper to cover the opening instead.
With makeshift tools and careful improvisation, he threads twine through the pole, attaching a bottle cap to measure how deep he is beneath the surface. The pole dashes through the mud, and after a grueling struggle he finally breaks through and discovers he is about 3 meters from the surface.
Desperation drives him to try to summon rescuers by creating smoke inside the car. He lights some paper, but the flame spirals out of control before he can contain it. He manages to extinguish the blaze, yet the earth shakes, and mud floods the pole with such force that it strikes him on the head, plunging him into unconsciousness.
When he awakens, the Jeep is more buried, and a head wound stings his skull. He fabricates a crude bandage from his button shirt and secures it with his belt, choosing to press on rather than wait for a second miracle.
He makes one last, stubborn stand against the encroaching mud. Summoning a surge of courage, he strips down to his underwear, coats himself in motor oil to reduce friction, and uses the spare tire as a makeshift air buoy. With the sunroof as his lone exit, he pushes through the sludge, digs with his hands, and fights his way toward freedom.
In a final, tense ascent, he breaches the surface and tunnels through the remaining soil, emerging into the open air. The camera lingers on his ascent, revealing the distant city skyline as if to remind him—and the audience—that survival comes with a price and a new horizon.
