We are introduced to Brent Magna (Ethan Hawke) as he arrives home to a scene of chaos, finding his house devastated, Christmas decorations in tatters, and blood on the floor. In a state of panic, he calls out for his wife, receiving no answer, when suddenly, his phone rings.

The narrative shifts to a parking garage where a customized Shelby Super Snake Mustang sits idle. Brent, in desperation, steals the car and makes his escape as security attempts to confront him.

A crucial flashback reveals Brent receiving a call from a middle-aged man simply known as The Voice (Jon Voight). This menacing figure informs Brent that his wife has been kidnapped and that he must follow his orders precisely if he wishes to see her again. The Voice instructs Brent to take the car, which is equipped with surveillance to monitor his every action, and is reinforced against gunfire. He is clearly warned: compliance is vital, as failure would result in his wife’s death.

As Brent speeds away, he notices police pursuing him. Utilizing his exceptional driving skills, he manages to evade them, setting strategic traps that culminate in crashes between police vehicles. Soon, The Voice instructs him to drive to a mountain location, reinforcing the rules—follow orders, or his wife pays the price. He demands proof of life, receiving a brief audio confirmation of her voice before The Voice cuts him off, ordering Brent to dispose of his phone.

The storyline is set against the intriguing backdrop of Sofia, Bulgaria. Meanwhile, Brent’s wife, Leanne (Rebecca Budig), is shown in a grim holding cell, her pleas for freedom falling on deaf ears.

Brent, in a turmoil of thought about his wife’s safety, receives another call directing him to execute dangerous driving maneuvers through a crowded area, wreaking havoc and endangering civilians. The Voice’s coldness is apparent as he congratulates Brent, pushing him further into chaos. Brent finds himself trapped by the police again, only to have further instructions from The Voice to park in a construction zone.

Unexpectedly, The Kid (Selena Gomez), a feisty car thief, confronts Brent with a gun, demanding he exits the vehicle. Brent resists, but The Voice orders him to take her along, proclaiming that he must kill her or his wife will die as a result. Brent can’t bring himself to follow through on the order, stating, > “I’m not a killer.” The Voice acknowledges this as a wise decision, indicating Brent may yet need The Kid’s assistance.

With the cops on their tail, Brent tries to lose them, while The Kid attempts to signal for help, despite Brent’s desperate situation. She soon reveals that the car is not just stolen; it’s her father’s vehicle. This situation rapidly escalates when The Voice intervenes again, issuing further threats and commands that leave both Brent and The Kid racing against time.
