Nine people board an elevator in a New York City skyscraper 52 stories tall: security guard Waleed Zuaiter, television reporter Tehmina Sunny and her fiancé Don, comedian Joey Slotnick, newly widowed Shirley Knight, overweight employee Devin Ratray, pregnant Anita Briem, and the building owner John Getz with his spoiled ten-year-old granddaughter Amanda Pace, who are on their way to a company party on the top floor.

On the way up, George, a claustrophobic, panics and, on the 49th floor, Madeline hits the emergency stop button to torment him. Henry presses the lobby floor button, but the elevator only descends by a few feet and stops. Henry calls security, but the elevator remains stubbornly still, forcing the group to confront their confinement. As tension rises, Jane, newly widowed and embittered, reveals a darker motive behind her visit to the party, and soon she collapses from a heart attack. Before she dies, she admits she has a bomb strapped around her waist, secured with a bike lock. Don attempts to search for an escape route via the ceiling, but the shaft proves impenetrable.

Maureen, ever the reporter, captures the moment on her phone and sends the footage to her station, turning a private nightmare into live news. The group debates their next move as Henry’s frustration with security grows, and the others grapple with fear, guilt, and shifting loyalties. Celine, who is pregnant, questions Don’s recent honesty, especially after he confesses that he might be the father of her unborn child, a revelation that unsettles Maureen and casts a shadow over their relationships. The bomb threat intensifies the stakes, and the clock ticks down with chilling precision.

The situation becomes a desperate physical struggle as they try to contain the bomb and survive. The bomb maker Michael Mercurio is shown in a live interview on Martin’s phone, explaining his motive as a grim, reluctant sense of repayment to Jane’s family. He estimates the device will detonate in ten minutes, turning their makeshift standoff into a countdown of inches and seconds. In a brutal turn, the group considers tearing Jane’s body away from the bomb to free themselves, but the plan falters as fear and panic take over. When hope flickers, Henry asserts control, and George pushes him to guarantee a substantial payoff should they all survive, offering each person $1 million as an incentive to endure.

Rescue finally arrives in the form of the bomb squad, who manage a limited opening in the shaft. They lower the car just enough to pull everyone out except Martin, who remains trapped by the tight space. The crew works frantically as the doors part, and the team watches in horror and awe as Martin realizes that his earlier actions—staying calm, keeping the others focused, and supporting the collective effort—have made him the inadvertent hero of the ordeal. The elevator descends toward the basement for a safer extraction, and Martin’s quiet resolve stands in stark contrast to the chaos around him.

Don is rushed to the hospital, while outside, Joey Slotnick as George faces the fallout of the experience. He lies to the press about his composure, claiming he stayed calm for everyone else, and then hurries away to reunite with his wife. Mohammed, the security guard, quietly watches the aftermath unfold, his thoughts lingering on what comes next for all of them. The film closes on a somber, contemplative note, reminding viewers that survival can elevate ordinary people into unexpected heroes, even as the price of their resilience lingers in the air.
