Married couple Jeff and Amy Taylor (Kurt Russell and Kathleen Quinlan) embark on a journey from Boston to California for a much-anticipated vacation. Their adventure takes a troubling turn when, while navigating through the desolate stretches of rural New Mexico, they nearly collide with another truck on the road. Moments later, Jeff finds himself confronted at a gas station by the truck’s aggressive driver, a hostile cowboy named Earl (M.C. Gainey), who unjustly berates him for what was essentially a careless driving mistake on his part. Rather than escalate the situation, Jeff chooses to wait for Amy and they leave the confrontation behind.
Their troubles deepen when their car unexpectedly breaks down in the desert. Desperate for help, Amy accepts a ride from the ostensibly friendly trucker Red Barr (J.T. Walsh) to a small diner located about five miles ahead, leaving Jeff behind to tend to the car. After diagnosing a problem with the disconnected wires, Jeff makes his way to the diner, only to discover that no one has seen his wife. In a state of rising panic, he drives to the nearest police station only to find himself grappling with the skepticism of the local sheriff (Rex Linn), who advises him to file a missing person’s report after conducting a pathetically brief search of Red’s truck.
Determined to find his wife, Jeff returns to the diner, but his inquiries draw hostility from both the owner and the patrons, and he is even threatened at gunpoint when insisting on reviewing recent receipts. Feeling increasingly desperate, he encounters Billy (Jack Noseworthy), a naïve local mechanic who claims to have witnessed the arrival of Amy with Red, and reveals she left with another trucker. Billy advises against contacting the police, insinuating their potential complicity in the matter, and gives Jeff potentially actionable directions.
Following Billy’s instructions, Jeff finds himself chasing after the kidnappers but is ambushed by Earl. A harrowing escape ensues, with Jeff plunging his Jeep into a river to evade capture, only to wake up in the trunk of a car. There, Billy drops his act and demands a ransom for Amy—$90,000—demanding that Jeff withdraw the money from a nearby bank while making it clear that any deception or alerting of authorities would lead to dire consequences for his wife.
Knowing he only possesses a fraction of that amount, Jeff devises a plan within the bank to signal for help but abandons it at the last moment out of fear of being watched. Instead, he steals markers and a letter opener from the bank manager’s desk to create a makeshift bundle of cash. Afterward, he is picked up by Earl, who taunts him about how easily they’ve manipulated his and Amy’s situation, at which point Jeff seizes the opportunity to turn the tables and extract information from Earl about Amy’s location.
The tension escalates dramatically as Jeff navigates a series of perilous confrontations with Earl and the sheriff; he even finds himself embroiled in a desperate struggle that leaves Earl dead. Time is of the essence as Jeff’s determination to rescue Amy propels him into a location where she is confined. Monitoring Red’s actions, Jeff orchestrates a daring rescue among complex turns of fate that reveal the dark underbelly of Red and his accomplices.
In a gripping climax filled with relentless pursuit and shocking revelations about Red’s sinister dealings with unsuspecting travelers, Jeff demonstrates remarkable resolve. As the action reaches its zenith, a harrowing car chase ensues, claiming lives and culminating in a lethal showdown between Jeff and Red. Ultimately, through astonishing acts of bravery, Jeff and Amy manage to escape the clutches of their captors, culminating in a heart-stopping moment of triumph. The film concludes with Jeff and Amy sitting together on an empty bridge, finally safe but forever changed by the ordeal they endured.
