In a Germany still haunted by the echoes of the Great War, the nation teeters between fractured democracy and a desperate yearning for order. The streets of the Weimar Republic pulse with political rallies, labor unrest, and a restless search for a new identity. Against this turbulent backdrop, the film immerses the viewer in a stark, almost claustrophobic world where uniforms, ideology and the promise of belonging loom large, casting long shadows over everyday life.

Franz Lang enters the story as a young man whose early aspirations to serve on the front lines are thwarted by circumstance, leaving him with a lingering sense of unfinished duty. A chance encounter with a weary army officer plants a single, stark maxim in his mind: the only true sin is to fail as a “good German.” That maxim becomes the compass that guides his relentless pursuit of structure, discipline and approval, shaping his every decision from the trenches to the factory floor.

As the post‑war chaos deepens, Lang drifts into nationalist circles and finds a temporary home among the paramilitary Freikorps, where his instinct for obedience is both tested and reinforced. The allure of the emerging Nazi movement offers him a clear hierarchy and a promise of purpose, drawing him into the ranks of the SA before an invitation from a senior party figure pulls him into the shadowy world of the SS. Here, he encounters Heinrich Himmler, whose presence underscores the chilling efficiency of the new order, and a young wife, Else, whose expectations mirror the regime’s ideal of the perfect citizen.

The film’s tone is unflinching and methodical, mirroring the protagonist’s own meticulous ascent.
