Amid the mounting tension, Clarissa, Redl’s wife, becomes a distant presence as illness shadows her life; still, Redl’s uncompromising sense of duty deepens, drawing him into the orbit of the heir to the throne—a ruthless schemer whose aim is to topple the Emperor. The plot they cloak in secrecy involves exploiting a vulnerable Ukrainian officer, a plan that backfires when the man is accidentally shot during a crackdown, undermining the heir’s scheme and forcing Redl into an ever-tightening circle of suspicion.

As the net closes, Redl’s vulnerability widens: he is seduced by an Italian officer and betrays military secrets to the Russians. Arrest follows, and the weight of the trap closes in. Kristof, now a loyal ally in a grim reversal, provides Redl with a service pistol and orders him to take his own life, a bitter decision that tests the limits of friendship and duty.
