In 1944 Romania, the Wehrmacht is steadily pressed back by the Red Army, and a frontline unit led by Major Kurt Fleischer, Gil Darnell, is pulled into a perilous mission beyond ordinary warfare. The squad’s orders are stark: escort Professor Anna Kappel, Miriam Cooke, from the Ahnenerbe into a forest long whispered about as a place of ancient power. They are joined by the enigmatic and dangerous SS Sturmbannführer Heinrich Metzger, Lucas Hansen, a man whose ruthlessness has unsettled even hardened soldiers. Tension crackles from the moment the group steps into the trees, where old loyalties and hidden motives collide.
Within the forest, the encounter unfolds with eerie suddenness. A Red Army squad flees in terror from an unseen force, and Fleischer’s unit weapons down most of the Russians, leaving only the sniper Natalya Kovalenko, Natalia Ryumina, alive to tell the tale. A brutal struggle ensues when the sniper Dieter Baum Baum pursues Natalya, and she dissolves into dust before their eyes. Ethereal figures in white robes watch from the margins, glimpsed by Metzger, who senses something ancient and unfathomable at work in the woods. An ominous warning comes from the wandering demented SS Standartenführer Ackermann, urging them to leave before he is killed. The squad also discovers the body of Bernd Dietrich, a fellow Ahnenerbe researcher, crushed beneath a tank in a section of the forest where such machines should not reach.
As strange events mount, strains grow between Fleischer and Metzger. Fleischer confides to his aide, Tom Sawyer Eric Fuchs, that Germany would fare better losing the war than being ruled by men like Metzger, a man capable of horrific acts and moral compromises. The mystery deepens when Fleischer learns that a previous mission, led by Dietrich and Ackermann, vanished in this same forest. Anna Kappel weighs in, revealing Dietrich’s belief in a race of “Aryan god-men”—superhuman beings said to dwell in the woods and capable of extraordinary powers. The mission’s purpose, she explains, is to locate a relic that would allow the god-men to grant the SS their influence and victory.
One by one, Fleischer’s team falls to chilling, inexplicable deaths. Night voices speak in unknown tongues, and the sense of a malignant force grows stronger. Fleischer begins to suspect that the god-men are real—and entirely hostile. Metzger, hearing of such power, longs to claim it for himself. Tom Sawyer Fuchs becomes entangled in a temporal loop, taken to a past moment where he witnesses the earlier expedition and learns that Kappel is not merely a researcher but a senior director at the Ahnenerbe. The revelation shakes the present as Fuchs drifts back, dying, and leaves a bloody warning at a distant, monumental stone complex within the forest.
When Fleischer, Kappel, and Metzger reach the same stone complex, they find the relic stored within a bag that emits a green glow. A brutal struggle erupts between Fleischer and Metzger as the latter fights to seize the relic for himself. Fleischer defeats him by killing Metzger, and he instructs Kappel to bury the relic, hoping to end the forest’s dangerous influence. Yet Kappel moves to use the relic to transform herself into one of the god-men, and the forest directly intervenes. The god-men eliminate Kappel, thrusting her to a fatal end as she drives a knife into her own heart. Fleischer buries the relic and exits the forest aged far beyond his years, the toll of the encounter evident in his worn features.
In a grim coda, Red Army soldiers arrive at the outskirts of the woods, where the aged veteran Fleischer is found and killed, a stark reminder of the war’s endless reach and the forest’s unearthly memory. The tale unfolds as a stark meditation on power, loyalty, and the cost of pursuing forces beyond human comprehension, leaving the characters’ fates enmeshed with a mystery that the forest itself seems to guard.
