The film begins with an elderly Confucius, Kong Qiu, looking back on his life and teachings. His memories set the stage for the story's historical and philosophical context. The narration hints at his lifelong quest to spread his ideals and his influence on Chinese culture.

In his early 50s, Kong Qiu is promoted from Mayor to Minister for Law in the state of Lu, a political shift that highlights his rising influence. Duke Lu Dinggong appoints him over the three noble families, asserting his authority in court. This marks a significant step in his political career amidst rival factions.

Confucius intervenes to save a slave-boy, Qi Sigong, who is about to be buried alive alongside his master. Despite opposition from the noble families and a military invasion led by Gongshan Niu, Confucius refuses to collaborate and advocates for the boy’s life, challenging traditional customs.

Confucius uses his influence at court to argue for Qi Sigong’s life and urges Duke Dinggong to abandon superstitious practices. His pleas win some support but face fierce opposition from the noble clans, reflecting the tension between tradition and reform.

Li Chu, a minister from Qi, warns Duke Jing of Lu’s rising power and plots from Qi to conquer Lu through diplomacy and military threats. Confucius senses the trap and urges his disciples to prepare an escape, highlighting the looming threat of invasion.

Confucius travels to Biyi to negotiate with Ji Sunsi for chariots, a show of force against Qi. He wins the chariots in an archery match, then employs strategic deception by staged movements of chariots, convincing Duke Jing of a larger force and forcing Qi to accept peace.

Duke Ling of Wei considers offering refuge to Gongshan Niu, a retainer of Lu, but Nanzi, the royal consort, advises against it, fearing diplomatic fallout. She recommends inviting Confucius for a meeting, highlighting the complex politics involving Wei and Lu.

Duke Dinggong attempts to consolidate power by removing the noble families’ walls, leading to a counterattack by the families. Confucius defends the capital with limited forces, but the noble clans invade, and ultimately, Lu’s military and political stability collapse, resulting in Kong Qiu’s dismissal.

After his defeat, Confucius leaves Lu and travels to various kingdoms including Wei, Song, and Zheng, seeking a place to teach and spread his philosophies. His efforts are met with resistance, but he continues to serve in advisory roles and uphold his teachings.

Kong Qiu’s disciple Yang Hui sacrifices himself to save sacred scrolls, symbolizing loyalty. Kong receives bad news about Zigong’s death in Wei and is increasingly aware of the political risks faced by his followers. These losses emphasize the hardships of his mission.

On his deathbed, Ji Sunsi urges Kong Qiu to return to Fu as a teacher, signaling the closing of his political and military career. Confucius finally agrees, preparing to compile the Spring and Autumn Annals, aiming to leave a lasting intellectual legacy.

The film concludes with the death of Confucius, the pioneer of education for all, at the age of 73. His teachings and philosophy continue to influence future generations, establishing his enduring legacy as a moral thinker and educator.
