Confucius, or Kong Qiu, is portrayed as a wise and reflective elder who begins his story as an old man reminiscing about his life’s journey. The film delves into his early days, highlighting his rise from a modest background to a prominent philosopher during the turbulent period of the Ding regime in the kingdom of Lu. At this time, power struggles simmer among the three noble clans—Jishi, Sushi, and Mengshi—who hold significant influence over the court. The Duke Lu Dinggong (Yao Lu) ascends to power and elevates Kong Qiu (Chow Yun-Fat) to the post of Minister of Law, over the objections of the noble families. Meanwhile, Yan Hui (Ren Quan), a devoted disciple of Confucius, plays a key role as a moral compass and loyal follower.

The story emphasizes Kong Qiu’s unwavering commitment to ethics and justice, often clashing with the entrenched noble interests. When he rescues a slave-boy, Qi Sigong (Liu Fengchao), from being buried alive—a traditional and outdated practice—he faces fierce opposition from the noble families, especially the Ji Sunsi (Chen Jianbin), the head of the Jishi clan. The conflict escalates as military invasions and political scheming threaten to destabilize Lu. Kong Qiu uses his diplomatic skills to negotiate peace, cleverly deploying tactics such as fake troop movements with the help of his disciples (Lu Yi) and others to outwit enemies like the Qi kingdom, whose ministers, notably Li Chu (Wang Huichun), scheme to conquer Lu.

Throughout the narrative, Kong Qiu is portrayed as an advocate for reform, advocating against superstitions and advocating for the life of Qi Sigong, all while navigating court politics and external threats. His diplomatic victories, however, are overshadowed by betrayal and war, culminating in the downfall of the Lu court and his eventual exile in 497 BC. His exile sees him wandering from state to state, seeking opportunities to spread his teachings while facing rejection and peril. Despite this, Kong Qiu’s resolve remains intact as he reaches the Kingdom of Wei, where he is offered land and resources to establish his school. There, he encounters Nan Nanzi (Zhou Xun), the ambitious and complex consort of Wei, who eagerly seeks to learn poetry but ultimately falls victim to political intrigue and is assassinated, leaving her with bitter regret and a love unfulfilled.

Kong Qiu’s journey takes him to the Kingdom of Song and Zheng, where he remains committed to his ideals amidst opposition. During the invasion of Lu by Qi in 484 BC, Kong Qiu’s influence becomes pivotal again when Ji Sunsi’s son appeals for his return to defend Lu. He sends his disciple Ran Qiu ([Ma Qiang]) to lead the military effort; Ran Qiu successfully claims victory, yet Kong Qiu remains estranged from the political fray. As the years pass, Kong’s disciples face personal sacrifices and the unavoidable losses of friends like Zigong ([Kan Jinming]) and Yang Hui, who heroically sacrifices himself to save his Master’s scrolls. These hardships underscore the personal cost of standing for righteousness.

As his life draws to a close, Kong Qiu is called back to his homeland by Ji Sunsi’s dying wish. He finally returns as an aged scholar, preparing the Spring and Autumn Annals, a historic record meant to influence future generations. The film concludes with Kong Qiu’s death at the age of 73, emphasizing his profound impact as a pioneer of education for all and a symbol of moral integrity.

This narrative is a rich tapestry of political intrigue, philosophical reflection, and enduring legacy that paints Kong Qiu not just as a teacher, but as a steadfast advocate for virtue amidst chaos and change.
