On a sunlit stretch of the Florida highway, a Vietnam veteran named Herschell encounters a young religious woman named Angel whose car has broken down, and his act of courtesy sets off a chain of unsettling events. Angel invites him to her home, where her sister Anne and a lively circle of friends are gathered, many of them smoking pot. Herschell refuses the marijuana after Angel warns him about the crowd, yet Anne makes repeated attempts to draw him into her world. Angel decides that Herschell should stay a while so he can get back on his feet, and what begins as hospitality gradually shifts into tension as Anne presses him to relax and partake. When Anne herself pushes him to light a joint, Herschell succumbs and finds himself pulled deeper into the drug scene, his resolve buckling under the influence.
A new chapter opens when Herschell lands a job at a local turkey farm. There, he crosses paths with two scientists conducting experiments that involve feeding certain chemicals to turkey meat. To secure his participation, the scientists dangle the lure of more marijuana, and Herschell agrees to try a sample of the turkey meat as part of a test. After he eats the whole turkey, he collapses and suffers a seizure. The scientists return to him with a mix of fear and opportunism, deciding to dispose of him by dumping his body in the surrounding woods, worried about what an investigation might reveal. Yet Herschell is not dead. He awakens to a disorienting transformation: a monstrous turkey head where his own head should be, and an unshakable addiction that now manifests as a craving for the blood of other addicts rather than the previous urge to smoke.
Desperate for help, he seeks out Anne. At first she offers support, but the horrific crime spree that follows—three people killed in service to his escalating craving—drives a break in her resolve. She enlists two friends to intervene, and the plan culminates in a brutal attempt to stop Herschell with a machete. Just as the act of beheading seems to be about to end his rampage, the scene abruptly shifts back to Herschell waking in the woods, revealing that the entire turkey-headed episode was a hallucination rather than reality. The reality resumes its path when the owner of the turkey farm tracks Herschell down and calls Angel at the rehab center where she volunteers. Angel arrives, urging Herschell to seek strength in prayer, and she escorts him to the rehabilitation facility to begin his journey toward recovery.
As the story unfolds, a thread of faith and doubt weaves through the narrative, balancing the grim reality of addiction with the possibility of redemption. The film closes on a note of renewed connection: Herschell is eventually reunited with a hopeful Anne, and the moments of eerie surrealism give way to a sense of tentative healing. Throughout the film, director Brad Grinter makes a recurring appearance to offer his observant, documentary-style commentary on the action, reminding viewers that what they witness is as much a reflection on perception as it is on addiction itself. This blend of stark realism and unsettling fantasy creates a stark meditation on how dependency can distort identity, and how, in the end, facing one’s struggles alongside others can lead to a fragile but real recovery.
