Bhaktha Prahlada

The tale opens with the Four Kumaras visiting Vaikuntha, the pristine realm of Vishnu [Haranath], where the gatekeepers Jaya and Vijaya fail to recognise them and refuse entry. This snub sets off a divine rift: the Kumaras curse the gatekeepers to surrender their divinity and be born as mortals on Earth. Vishnu cannot lift the curse, but offers two grueling paths to mend the bond with the divine: remain Vishnu’s devotees for seven human lifetimes, or become his adversaries across three demonic lifetimes. Unable to bear even a moment apart from the divine, the two gatekeepers choose the harsher route, sealing their own fate.

In their first mortal lives, Jaya-Vijaya are born as Hiranyakashipu [S. V. Ranga Rao] and Hiranyaksha to the sage Kashyapa and Earth goddess Diti [Jayanthi] at sunset, during an inauspicious hour. Hiranyaksha torments the Earth and its peoples, driving Bhudevi to plead for celestial aid. Vishnu descends in the Varaha avatar to rescue the planet, slaying Hiranyaksha and restoring balance. The fallen hero battles with his own growing arrogance, and Hiranyakashipu earnestly seeks immortality by appealing to Brahma. The boon he secures makes him immune to death by man, beast, or any power in creation, a shield that brazenly defies the normal rules of mortality.

Meanwhile, Indra, king of the gods, tries to take Leelavathi and her unborn child’s life. The sage Narada intervenes, guiding Leelavathi to his hermitage where she gives birth to a devoted boy named Prahlada [Roja Ramani]. Hiranyakashipu then invades Vaikuntha in search of Vishnu, but finds nothing and returns to Earth, proclaiming himself sovereign of all celestial realms. The gods implore Vishnu to intervene, and he promises to end Hiranyakashipu’s tyranny in due time.

Five years pass before Prahlada’s education begins at the hermitage of Chanda-Amarka, under the watch of his master’s descendants. Upon his return, Prahlada remains steadfast in his devotion to Srihari, even as his father tries to sway him away from Vishnu. Hiranyakashipu’s anger grows as Prahlada’s faith does not waver, and he subjects his son to a succession of brutal trials designed to induce fear and break his will. The boy endures starvation, confinement, and brutal punishments, and even soldiers trample him in a bid to end his life. Yet Prahlada’s prayers to Srihari yield miraculous responses: the elephants halt, and the venomous snakes before him transform into garlands of flowers. The snake charmers themselves are awed by the child’s devotion and beg Prahlada to restore the serpents—an act that only deepens Hiranyakashipu’s fury and cements the boy’s leadership among the devotees.

The tyrant then orders Prahlada’s hands and feet bound and cast into the sea. Believing his son dead, Hiranyakashipu is filled with a grim pride—until Srihari resurfaces to protect Prahlada and return him home. Narada’s counsel reinforces the truth that Srihari dwells within Prahlada, and that harming the boy would be a direct assault on Vishnu’s very presence.

Desperation drives Hiranyakashipu to offer Prahlada poisoned milk in his sight. The fearless child drinks and survives, prompting his father to ask where Srihari resides. Prahlada answers that the divine is omnipresent. In a final act of defiance, Hiranyakashipu strikes a pillar with his mace, summoning Narasimha—an avatar of Vishnu with a human torso and a lion’s face. The enraged Narasimha defeats Hiranyakashipu with a force that bypasses the boons of immortality, and Prahlada’s piety, along with the celestial beings’ praise, tempers the creaturely wrath. Vishnu reappears to crown Prahlada as a king of the demons and exhorts him to rule with virtue and righteousness, completing the cycle of devotion, danger, and divine justice.
