Duryodhana defends Karna when he is insulted for his low birth at the archery competition in Hastinapura. Recognizing Karna's exceptional skill and seeing potential in having a powerful ally, Duryodhana crowns him king of Anga. This act forges their lifelong alliance, with Karna pledging unwavering loyalty to Duryodhana in return.

This alliance becomes central to the story, with Karna remaining loyal to Duryodhana even after learning his true identity as Kunti's firstborn.

Despite learning he is Kunti's firstborn and therefore the elder Pandava, Karna chooses to remain with Duryodhana because of his deep sense of loyalty and gratitude. Duryodhana accepted him when others mocked his low birth, crowned him king, and gave him respect and friendship when he had nothing. Karna's honor prevents him from abandoning the friend who stood by him.

This loyalty leads to Karna's tragic death at Kurukshetra, fighting against his own brothers.

While Parasurama slept, Indra disguised as an insect bit Karna on the foot. Karna endured excruciating pain rather than wake his guru, proving his devotion. However, Parasurama was a Brahman who had taken a vow not to be disturbed by Kshatriyas, and when he learned a Kshatriya had deceived him, he cursed Karna that his skills would abandon him at the moment he needed them most.

This curse manifests during Karna's final battle when his chariot wheel gets stuck and his divine weapons fail him.

Indra, disguised as a Brahmin, approaches Karna and asks for his divine armor and earrings (Kavacha and Kundala) as charity. Karna, known for his generosity, gives them away despite knowing they provided invincibility. In exchange, Indra grants him the Vasavi Shakti, a powerful weapon meant to kill Arjuna. However, Karna must use it during a night attack, forfeiting his protective armor at a critical moment.

This exchange leaves Karna vulnerable during his final battle with Arjuna.

Kunti approaches Karna during the war and pleads with him to either join the Pandavas or spare her sons. Karna agrees not to kill any of the Pandavas except Arjuna, ensuring Kunti will retain five sons. This pledge protects his brothers while still allowing him to honor his loyalty to Duryodhana by facing Arjuna.

This pledge ultimately protects the Pandavas but puts Karna in a difficult position during battle.

Bhishma labels Karna "Ardharatha," meaning son of a charioteer, denying his royal status and questioning his right to fight. This refers to Karna's adoption by the charioteer Adhiratha and his disputed birth. Bhishma refuses to allow someone of questionable lineage to participate in the war under his command.

Karna swears not to fight until Bhishma is incapacitated, which delays his entry into the battle.

While traveling, Karna disturbs the earth to squeeze ghee from the soil to help a distressed girl who needed it. Bhudevi, the Earth goddess, curses him that his chariot wheel will become stuck at a critical moment in battle. This curse fulfills during Karna's final battle when his wheel sinks into the ground, leaving him vulnerable.

The curse directly contributes to Karna's death at the hands of Arjuna.

Karna watches Dronacharya sever Ekalavya's thumb to ensure his student Arjuna remains the best archer. This act of sacrificing a talented warrior to protect privileged students intensifies Karna's resentment toward the rigid social hierarchy. He vows to surpass Arjuna in skill, driven by both ambition and anger at the injustice of the caste system.

This vow motivates Karna's relentless pursuit of archery excellence and his rivalry with Arjuna.

During their final duel, Karna's chariot wheel sinks into the ground due to Bhudevi's curse. According to the warrior code, Arjuna should wait for Karna to recover his chariot before continuing. However, Krishna urges Arjuna to strike, arguing that Duryodhana's adharma (unrighteousness) justifies breaking the rules. Arjuna kills the unarmed Karna, which becomes one of the war's most controversial moments.

This act haunts the Pandavas and sparks debate about dharma throughout the epic.

When Indra, disguised as a biting insect, attacks Karna while he trains under Parasurama, Karna suffers immense pain but refuses to cry out. He fears waking his guru, who had explicitly forbidden being disturbed during meditation. This act demonstrates Karna's exceptional discipline and devotion to his teacher, though it ultimately leads to Parasurama's curse when he discovers a Kshatriya has deceived him.

This incident directly results in the curse that weakens Karna in his final battle.

Karna is ordered to destroy Abhimanyu's bow during the battle, leading to the young warrior's death in the melee. Despite fighting for the Kaurava side, Karna shows respect for Abhimanyu's courage and mourns the loss of such a brave young fighter. This moment highlights Karna's inherent nobility and his awareness of the war's tragic cost, even among enemies.

This mourning demonstrates Karna's complex nature as a warrior who fights out of loyalty but retains compassion.

A baby Karna is discovered floating in the Ganga River and rescued by the charioteer Adhiratha, who adopts him as his own son. This marks Karna's life as an outsider, he grows up unaware of his true royal lineage as Kunti's firstborn son, raised in a lower social station. This background fuels his ambition and shapes his identity throughout the story.

Karna's origins as an outsider create the foundation for the social rejections he faces and the loyalty he seeks from those who accept him.

As the Kurukshetra War approaches, Krishna tells Karna that he is Kunti's firstborn, elder to Arjuna and the rightful heir to the Kuru throne. Krishna hopes this revelation might sway Karna to join the Pandavas. The revelation creates a profound dilemma for Karna, forcing him to choose between his birthright and his loyalty to Duryodhana.

This knowledge makes Karna's choice to stay with Duryodhana even more tragic, as he fights against his own brothers.

After Arjuna kills Karna with Krishna's counsel, the truth of Karna's identity is revealed to the Pandavas. Kunti confesses that Karna was her firstborn, abandoned at birth to protect her reputation. Karna's soul ascends to join Surya, the Sun God, who is his true divine father. In heaven, Karna is reunited with Duryodhana, honoring their bond beyond death.

This ending confirms Karna's divine origins and his tragic yet honorable place in the epic.
