The Deluge

Set in the 17th century during the Swedish invasion of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth from 1655 to 1658, a conflict historians call The Deluge, the film chronicles a nation hammered by war and plague, a quarter of whose people perish and whose economy lies in ruins, even as courage and loyalty push a fractured people to weather the storm.

At the heart of the story is Andrzej Kmicic, a bold cavalry officer who returns to the Billewicz family estate to fulfill his late patron’s will and marry Oleńka Billewiczówna. Drawn to Olenka yet hampered by his own reckless courage and the unruly band under his command, he finds the local nobility ready to block the union. A sequence of violent clashes erupts, culminating in Kmicic burning the Butrym estate and abducting Olenka, a provocation that drives the nobles, led by Colonel Michał Wołodyjowski, to lay siege to his manor. After a brutal duel with Wołodyjowski, Kmicic survives only because his opponent spares him and urges him to redeem himself in service to their homeland.

As the conflict intensifies, Kmicic initially aligns himself with the Lithuanian Hetman Janusz Radziwiłł, only to learn of Radziwiłł’s treasonous alliance with Sweden and plans to dismantle the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth. Disillusioned, Kmicic attempts a bold move to capture Janusz’s brother, Prince Bogusław Radziwiłł, but the plan ends in failure and him being hunted as a traitor by both sides. The web of loyalties grows murky, and the lines between honor and survival blur as the war rages on.

In the second act, Kmicic overhears a plan to loot the revered Jasna Góra monastery and chooses to intervene. He warns the monastery’s prior and takes part in defending the sanctuary from a Swedish siege. His courage is tested as he sabotages the Swedish artillery, is captured and tortured by a Polish collaborator, yet is rescued by allies. His journey then leads him to Silesia to seek out King Jan II Casimir Vasa, and the king, impressed by Kmicic’s bravery, grants him command of a Tatar cavalry unit. The tale widens to Olenka’s peril as she is held captive by Bogusław, who schemes to win her over, yet she escapes when she uncovers his sinister plans. The focus tightens on the broader war effort as the Polish forces, led by Stefan Czarniecki, mount a decisive counterattack against the Swedes, with Kmicic once again proving his mettle.

Redeeming himself becomes a central thread as Kmicic captures Bogusław Radziwiłł in a duel, an act that cements his return from perceived treachery and clears a path toward reconciliation. The climactic push sees Czarniecki’s troops gain the upper hand, and Kmicic’s earlier trials culminate in a broader restoration of honor for the beleaguered forces. He returns to the Billewicz estate, where Olenka, having wrestled with doubt and disappointment, begins to reassess his role in their world. A royal decree ultimately absolves Kmicic of all accusations, revealing the extent of his bravery and sacrifice. Overwhelmed by the truth of his deeds, Olenka renounces despair and accepts his proposal, choosing to marry him as the story draws to a hopeful, triumphant close.

The film’s sweeping arc is anchored by a tapestry of personal and political reckonings: a nation’s resilience under occupation, the complex interplay of loyalty and betrayal among noble houses, and the momentous acts of individuals who choose to stand firm despite the cost. Across battlefields, sieges, and courtly corridors, the characters confront moral tests that redefine their futures, turning a time of vast disruption into a tale of redemption, loyalty, and renewed love.
