In winter 1942‑43 a Jewish family jumps from a train and is scattered in the woods. Leon, a farmer, hides Rosa in his cellar, hides the fact her husband may be alive and urges her to love him. Rosa trades herself for money to aid another hidden Jew. Their bond deepens, but Leon’s empathy fails, causing tragedy, and war’s end brings glimmer of hope.
