In 1930s Budapest, restaurant owner László hires pianist András to play in his venue. Both men fall for waitress Ilona, who inspires András to write his only piece, the haunting 'Gloomy Sunday.' The melody is loved at first but soon triggers a series of suicides. Tensions rise when German Hans also loves Ilona, upsetting the fragile ménage‑à‑trois.
