Shyam Tekchand Nawazuddin Siddiqui is a patient and thoughtful schoolteacher in a quiet village. Among his students are Sandhya Shweta Tripathi Sharma and her friends Mintu Mohammad Samad and Kamal Irfan Khan. Kamal quietly harbors a crush on Sandhya, but she shows little interest, setting a tentative tension that threads through their classroom dynamics.

After school, Shyam visits Sandhya’s home to have some documents notarized by her father, a local police inspector, drawing the two into closer contact than before. Sandhya takes care of her father when he arrives home drunk, and she follows him to a party when he claims he’s heading out on a work trip. On her way back, Sandhya injures her knee and ends up at Shyam’s house, where his wife Sunita Trimala Adhikari warmly cares for her and allows her to stay for the night. During the night, Sandhya glances at Shyam and Sunita together, and while she sleeps, Shyam attempts to talk to her and teases her, leaving her feeling angry and exposed.

The next day, Sandhya rebukes Shyam for lying about whether he and Sunita are intimate, and she learns more about the complicated family dynamics at play. It’s revealed that Sandhya’s mother abandoned her as a child, and her father has started dating someone new but has not yet told Sandhya the full truth. In the meantime, Shyam fixes an old moped, Luna, at Sandhya’s home, and the two begin meeting in secret, sparking an affair that stirs jealousy in Kamal and prompts Mintu to offer help.

One month later, Sandhya confides that she might be pregnant, and they secretly travel to the city for a check-up at a clinic. At the women’s clinic, Sandhya is recognized by her father’s girlfriend, who keeps the secret, and Sandhya discovers that she is not pregnant. They share a relieved laugh on their return to the village, but Shyam makes it clear that they should end their relationship and keep it strictly a student-teacher matter.

Rumors about their liaison spread anyway, and Sunita threatens to leave Shyam. In a fit of anger, Shyam scolds and hits Sandhya for appearing so obvious about their affair. Meanwhile, Mintu and Kamal ignite chaos in Shyam’s empty home, triggering Shyam’s suspicions about intruders when Sunita returns. In a chilling turn, Shyam catches Mintu and asphyxiates him to death, and Kamal, who had fled, returns with a rock and fatally strikes Shyam, ending the tragedy as the two men die in the same house.
