In winter 1943 two Jewish youths, Alek and Fryda, escape the Warsaw Ghetto via sewers. Alek carries undeveloped photos of the horrors and finds a safe apartment occupied by Germans. Polish tenant Stefania offers her flat and they spend the night together. She hides a Jew, even rescuing Fryda from a church, but Fryda sabotages safety.
