In 1962, David D'Costa leads a poor life in Madras with his pregnant wife Mary. He idolizes the MP Chaturvedi and even introduces Mary to him. They name their newborn son James after Chaturvedi's blessing.

David is arrested while obstructing rail traffic and is bailed out by his friend Mahesh. When he returns home, Mary has committed suicide and left a handwritten note accusing Chaturvedi of rape. The note fuels David's sense of injustice and sets the tragedy in motion.

Inspector Sahay and Dr. Verma manipulate Mary's note and burn the original evidence. They lie in court and help convict David, branding him the killer of Mary. He is sentenced to twenty-four years in prison for a crime he did not commit.

Before entering prison, David asks Mahesh to become James's guardian, hoping he will raise the boy to be a fearless criminal who can avenge Mary. He entrusts Mahesh with the boy's future as his long absence begins. The plan plants the seed for a long, personal vendetta.

In 1986, David is released from prison. He finds Mahesh has changed, no longer a bootlegger and now living a wealthy, legitimate lifestyle. Mahesh hints at leaving the past behind, but David stays focused on his goal of vengeance.

Mahesh reveals that he renamed James as Vijay and raised him as his own son. Vijay grows up to be a law-enforcing officer who hates criminals, a stark contrast to David's vengeful plan.

David spots Vijay at a graveyard and recognizes the striking resemblance to his own son. He chooses to conceal his identity, deciding to observe from the shadows as the planned confrontation nears.

David disguises himself as a church priest and goes to the police station to discuss a dangerous killer targeting three men. Vijay overhears the conversation via a hidden mic, and David, revealing his true identity, threatens Sahay. In the ensuing chaos, David ties up Sahay and hangs him, killing him when Vijay opens the door.

Vijay investigates the killer and notices the uncanny likeness between himself and David. He reports his findings to the police and is assigned to protect Chaturvedi and Dr. Verma, who becomes the next target.

David abducts Vinita, the DIG Bhatnagar's daughter, to pressure Bhatnagar into handing Verma over. When Bhatnagar refuses, David corners Verma and shoots him through a window, killing him in a cold, strategic strike.

Vinita returns and, after pressing Mahesh for answers, learns that Vijay is David's son. The revelation deepens the personal stakes as father and son exist on opposite sides of the law.

Vijay, realizing his father’s identity, disguises himself as David to confront Mahesh. The ruse exposes the family’s dark past, leading to Mahesh's arrest and a crisis of conscience for Vijay. He contemplates his role, questioning his loyalties.

Vijay feels torn about protecting the very man who fathered his mother’s assailant, considering resignation. DIG Bhatnagar urges him to press on, reinforcing the duty to uphold justice despite personal ties.

Vijay and David cross paths at his mother's grave; they share a moment of quiet prayer before a tense confrontation. David escapes, leaving Vijay haunted by the moral complexities of their relationship.

At a political rally, David plants a bomb linked to Chaturvedi's vehicle. Vijay and the police pursue him into the drains, where David is cornered. He is shot by Vijay and collapses; Chaturvedi dies from David's earlier assault, leaving Vijay to face a haunting, paternal outcome.
