A Better Tomorrow

Ho Ti Lung is a senior member of a powerful Hong Kong triad who runs a lucrative printing and distribution operation that churns out counterfeit American bank notes. He is a trusted figure within the organization, handling the most sensitive transactions, while his close ally and frontline partner is Chow Yun-Fat Mark Lee, his best friend, bodyguard, and business associate. The film opens with a day in their world: they watch a fresh batch of counterfeit notes come off the presses and meet with foreign clients to trade product for counterfeit Hong Kong dollar notes, establishing a rhythm of risk, precision, and shared purpose that defines their bond.

Back home, Ho’s younger brother Kit Leslie Cheung Sung Chi Kit has just graduated high school and is being groomed to join the police. Ho keeps his criminal life hidden from Kit and encourages his brother’s career, while their ailing father pleads for Ho to leave crime behind. Ho makes a hopeful pledge to retire after his next deal in Taiwan, imagining a quieter future. Into this fragile arrangement steps Shing Waise Lee Chi-Hung, a low-ranking triad member whom Ho agrees to mentor. The fragile peace is shattered when Taiwanese triads ambush them; a heated gunfight erupts as Ho and Shing scramble for safety, forcing them to flee into a sewage tunnel while law enforcement closes in. Ho makes a decisive choice: he tells Shing to run and surrenders to the police to buy time for his companion’s escape, a moment that ultimately lands him a three-year prison sentence.

The violence reverberates through the family. The triads attempt to kidnap Ho’s father as leverage to keep him silent behind bars; the desperate ploy ends with the elder Sung fatally stabbed. Kit and his girlfriend Jackie Emily Chu Bo-Yee manage to subdue the attacker, but the father’s dying blessing—urging forgiveness for Ho—falls on deaf ears for Kit, who blames his brother for the father’s death and the family’s ruin. In the wake of this loss, Mark travels to Taiwan seeking answers from the triads’ leadership. He confronts the mastermind at a restaurant, engages in a deadly exchange with the man’s guards, and emerges with a grim scar—Mark is crippled by a leg injury that marks a permanent turn in his life and his sense of purpose.

Upon his release, Ho faces a crossroads. A corrupt policeman offers to guide him back into the sphere of the triad, but Ho refuses, choosing instead to start anew as an ordinary technician on the outside world by taking a job at a taxi company run by another ex-con named Ken. It’s here that Ho runs into Mark again, only to discover that his old friend has been maimed not just physically but morally, left adrift after Shing’s ascent to power. Mark’s bitterness is palpable, and he urges Ho to face Shing and the past they shared. Ho resists at first, but the pull of old loyalties and unfinished business pulls him back toward Kit, now a police officer, in the hope of reconciliation.

Kit’s resentment toward Ho remains fierce, and he is determined to bring Shing down, even as Ho warns him of the danger and the price. Shing, sensing an opportunity to consolidate control, pushes into drug trafficking and tests Ho’s resolve by sending his men to assault the taxi company and by targeting Mark, who has become a pawn in a larger vendetta. Mark’s insistence on taking action rekindles a flame of retaliation in Ho, who finally agrees to strike back. The trio—Ho, Mark, and Kit—narrow their focus toward Shing, using a stolen computer tape containing the printing plate data to expose Shing’s role in the ambush years earlier. The tape becomes leverage, a means to blackmail Shing in exchange for a escape route by sea.

As the plan unfolds, Ho ensures the tape reaches Kit, turning the tables on Shing. With Shing held hostage, Ho and Mark orchestrate a risky exchange at a pier, hoping to sever Shing’s hold and secure their future. Mark’s selflessness surfaces once more as he urges Ho and Kit to focus on the immediate danger while he tries to make his own exit. Kit arrives to seize control of the situation, but Shing’s men press the attack, pushing the confrontation into a brutal standoff. The gunfight brutalizes all three of them, and Mark, drawn back into the line of fire, is fatally shot by Shing’s henchman, a moment that seals the tragedy of their tangled pasts.

In the final, dramatic turn, Ho retrieves his courage and shoots Shing with Kit’s gun, ending Shing’s power once and for all. As the police close in, Ho makes a physical and symbolic gesture: he handcuffs himself to Kit, binding their fates together in the face of consequence, and they begin to walk toward the gathering officers. The scene lingers on the brothers’ uneasy reunion, a quiet acknowledgment of the debt to their father’s memory and to Mark’s sacrifice, even as the shadow of the triad’s violence continues to loom.
