During the tumultuous Prohibition era, the Bondurant brothers – Forrest, Howard, and Jack – run a thriving liquor bootlegging operation in Franklin County, Virginia. They cleverly masquerade their illegal activities by using their bar as a front, with the help of their loyal friend, Cricket Pate. When Jack witnesses a chilling scene where mobster Floyd Banner eliminates a rival, it marks the beginning of their complications. Shortly afterward, Forrest recruits Maggie Beauford, a captivating dancer from Chicago, as their new waitress.
Their operations attract the attention of the vicious Special Agent Charlie Rakes, who arrives with an ultimatum from District Attorney Mason Wardell, demanding a cut of their profits. Refusing to be intimidated, Forrest brazenly threatens Rakes, declaring that he would kill him if he dared to return. Despite their defiance, the brothers soon find themselves succumbing to Rakes’ merciless intimidation tactics.
Meanwhile, Jack’s romantic entanglements grow when he meets Bertha Minnix, the local preacher’s daughter. In a misguided effort to impress her, he embarrasses himself at church, which only deepens her intrigue. As tensions rise, Rakes begins a violent campaign against the Bondurants, including a brutal raid on Cricket’s home. Following an incident where Jack tries to defend Cricket, he suffers a brutal beating at Rakes’ hands, leading Forrest to encourage him to learn to stand up for himself.
Life for the brothers takes a violent turn when they attempt to secure business from Chicago but find themselves double-crossed. Fortunately, they are saved by Banner who, already aware of the assault on Forrest, offers Jack insights about their attackers. In a calculated move, the brothers seek retribution by tracking down and dispatching the assailants. Their criminal enterprise flourishes, and with the profits, Jack continues to woo Bertha, while Forrest draws closer to Maggie, who is keeping her traumatic past buried.
However, a fateful visit to the distillation site with Bertha leads to a dire confrontation with Rakes and his thugs. The ensuing chaos results in Howard incapacitating Rakes, and as Jack nearly ends Rakes’ life, the brothers are forced to escape. Tragically, Cricket is later captured and killed by Rakes, igniting a fierce desire for vengeance in Jack.
Driven by anger, Jack seeks out Rakes at a local bridge, with Howard rallying the others to join their cause. Despite Maggie’s pleas to keep Forrest out of harm, he makes the choice to fight alongside his brothers. The volatile showdown results in a vicious firefight, where Forrest is gravely injured. In a climactic moment, Jack manages to shoot Rakes, later resulting in Howard’s fatal blow to the agent.
With Rakes and his gang vanquished, the Bondurants contemplate their future, resolved to save their hard-earned money and retire once Prohibition is lifted. Love blossoms as Jack marries Bertha, Forrest ties the knot with Maggie, and Howard weds a local woman, welcoming children into their families. However, the story takes a tragic turn during a reunion when Forrest, inebriated and careless, falls into a frozen lake. The ensuing pneumonia claims his life a few weeks later, marking a somber end to an era defined by turmoil, brotherhood, and sacrifice.
