Mike Enslin arrives at a deserted lodge during a torrential downpour, seeking shelter from the rain. The elderly couple managing the lodge seem to be expecting him, hinting at something ominous about his visit.

During his stay, the couple shares chilling tales about the lodge, including the tragic history of a servant's suicide and the death of the innkeeper's children. Despite their distressing stories, Mike treats them as mere anecdotes, showcasing his skepticism.

Mike explores the attic where the infamous haunted room is located, finding it ordinary and devoid of supernatural activity. As he puts his equipment to use, he eventually gives in to exhaustion and falls asleep.

The following day, Mike attends a poorly attended book signing at a local store, highlighting his declining popularity as a writer. A young girl named Anna surprises him by mentioning his emotional non-horror book, briefly lifting his spirits.
