Haunted Road

On a road trip to attend a friend’s wedding, a tight-knit group of seven friends—Xuelian, Zengliang, Huazi, Haojian, Ningmeng, Xiaotian, and Dudu—stumbles upon the aftermath of a car accident on a highway. Instead of stopping to help the victim, they press on with their plans, already showing signs of a self-absorbed indifference that will quietly thread through the night. When their own car breaks down later, they are forced to seek shelter at a quiet road stop, and the setting becomes a suspended space where fear, guilt, and hidden motives start to surface.

Xuelian is the lens through which the audience observes the group, delivering a steady stream of monologues that critique her friends for being unsympathetic to the injured victim and for treating love as something defined by physical desire. She also hints at deeper tensions, suggesting that true feelings only emerge when the group is pushed into conflict. The stop feels deserted, the mood grows tense, and a sense of unease settles over the seven as they decide to spend the night there, turning the ordinary roadside into a liminal stage.

Dudu, ever the single-hearted foodie, is dared to take a selfie across the road, a dare that becomes a catalyst for danger. When the lights flicker off one by one, Dudu flees to the service store, pursued by a spectral presence that seems to feed on their fear. The tension escalates as the ghost closes in, and the world the friends know begins to fracture under the weight of what they might have done or left undone.

Meanwhile, Xiaotian is coaxed by Zengliang into taking food and drinks from the garage, a task that spirals into theft—taking money from the counter and, heartbreakingly, siphoning the savings of the car accident victim. The moment of triumph as they celebrate these minor gains is short-lived, for the ghost soon hunts Xiaotian down, ending his improvised spree with a deadly chase.

As the night deepens, Xuelian and Haojian decide to search for Dudu. Haojian’s confession of love for Xuelian is brushed aside by her, as she prioritizes the search over personal romance. They are joined by Ningmeng, who harbors her own unrequited love for Haojian, while Zengliang and Huazi give in to a moment of passion in the garage, a brief respite that underscores the group’s tangled relationships and the fragility of their bonds.

The search leads them to Dudu’s body in the cafeteria, a grim discovery that shatters the fragile order of the group. Ningmeng is left behind in a moment of panic and is killed when the ghost coils tight cloths and clothesline wires around her, a brutal image of the consequences that fear can weave. Zengliang and Huazi regroup with the others after stumbling upon Xiaotian’s corpse in the restroom, their shock compounded by the realization that the danger is far from over.

Tensions rise as Haojian, driven by jealousy or fear, attempts to wipe out the others. He injures Zengliang’s knee but is eventually knocked unconscious by Xuelian and left to be claimed by the ghost, a fate that underscores the peril of unchecked anger and desperation.

The survivors come to a grim realization: the deaths are foreshadowed by a sequence of eerie photos that briefly reach the living—Dudu’s image was sent to Xiaotian, Xiaotian’s to Zengliang, Ningmeng’s to Huazi, and Haojian’s to Xuelian. Their attempts to start a stray car at the garage prove futile, and the sense of being trapped deepens.

Jealousy and fear drive Huazi to violence, faking a cursed photo and striking Xuelian with a ratchet spanner, a blow that seems mortal at first. The trio eventually leaves the web of the garage only to see Huazi break her leg in a bush, a painful turn that isolates her further. Zengliang, left to navigate the wreckage of the night with Xuelian, departs, but is soon killed by the ghost as the last shred of their bond dissolves into the surrounding emptiness.

Alone on the road, Xuelian confronts the final truth: she is the car accident victim, a revelation that reframes the night’s horrors. Abused and tormented since childhood, she had attempted suicide by swerving onto the highway, only to survive. The six people she imagined as friends were strangers who happened to stop after witnessing the crash and stepping into her life at a moment of profound vulnerability. The six “friends” are revealed as manifestations of her trauma, and her earlier monologues become her way of processing that darkness.

In the closing moments, Xuelian acknowledges that those strangers helped her escape not just from the physical danger of the night but from a long-held, painful worldview. The film ends on a note that is both haunting and strangely hopeful: through the acts of strangers who showed up in her darkest hour, she begins to reclaim a sense of humanity and possibility beyond the trauma that once defined her.
