In a dystopian future, Sentinels, robotic enforcers, are on a relentless mission to eradicate all mutants as well as the humans who assist them. A group of mutants, with the aid of Kitty Pryde, who possesses the unique ability to project a person’s consciousness back in time, manages to evade these merciless machines in Moscow. As the Sentinels attack, Kitty sends the consciousness of one mutant into the past, aiming to alter a catastrophic event that would ensure the present won’t unfold as it currently does.

The team meets a coalition of powerful allies including Storm, Wolverine, Professor Xavier and [Patrick Stewart], and Magneto and Ian McKellen) at a sanctuary in China. Kitty sends Wolverine’s consciousness back to 1973, tasking him with preventing [Mystique from assassinating Bolivar Trask, the architect behind the Sentinel program.

The aftermath of Mystique’s assassination leads to her capture, with her DNA being exploited by Trask’s company to engineer Sentinels capable of adapting to any mutant’s abilities, rendering them almost unstoppable. To find a solution, Xavier and Magneto instruct Wolverine to seek out their younger selves for assistance. However, time is of the essence; should the Sentinels find the mutants in China, Kitty will be consumed with projecting Logan into the past and will be unable to save anyone else.

Upon awakening in 1973, Wolverine finds himself in his younger form, still wielding his original claws. At the X-Mansion, he meets Xavier and Beast. The institution has closed due to the Vietnam War drafting many of its staff and students. Xavier, now a shadow of his former self, relies on a serum to regain his ability to walk (following severe injuries from the Cuban Missile Crisis) and to suppress his telepathy.

Wolverine reveals his mission to Xavier, persuading him to help liberate Magneto from a prison beneath the Pentagon, where he is incarcerated under accusations of assassinating President John F. Kennedy (offering a twist on the magic bullet theory). With the speedy assistance of Peter Maximoff, a mutant with incredible speed, they successfully break Magneto out of prison.

In Washington D.C., Trask faces challenges as he tries to secure funding for his Sentinel program. The defense committee remains skeptical about the necessity of targeting mutants. Meanwhile, in Saigon, Mystique intervenes to prevent a young William Stryker from seizing a group of mutant GIs for Trask’s experiments.

Diving deeper into her investigation, Mystique uncovers Trask’s ominous plans—detaining mutants for testing and plans for a meeting with Vietnamese generals in Paris. As she infiltrates the Paris Peace Accords disguised as a South Vietnamese general, Xavier, Magneto, Beast, and Wolverine race to stop her just as Mystique is poised to strike.

Confrontation ensues in the streets of Paris, where Magneto attempts to eliminate Mystique to secure her DNA from Sentinel exploitation, though she escapes. As chaos unfolds, Kitty’s grasp on Logan weakens in the future, resulting in his injuring her. Although Trask is spared, the unveiling of mutants sends shockwaves through society. President Nixon, influenced by these events, approves Trask’s Sentinel program.

In Paris, Mystique confronts Magneto about his actions against her. In a calculated maneuver, Magneto regains control over the Sentinels by infusing them with steel, taking charge of their command. Meanwhile, Xavier forgoes his serum to restore his mental faculties, resulting in the loss of his ability to walk but reigniting his vision for a peaceful coexistence between humans and mutants.

As the climax unfolds, Nixon prepares to showcase the Sentinel prototypes at the White House. Mystique’s latest attempt to assassinate Nixon is thwarted by Xavier, who convinces her that resorting to murder is not the answer. Magneto, however, seizes control of the Sentinels and violently clashes with the assembled crowd.

In the future, the X-Men make a desperate stand against the advancing Sentinels. Back in 1973, the series of events culminate as Mystique, disguised as Nixon, subdues Magneto with a plastic firearm. With Xavier’s guidance, she chooses mercy and decides to spare Trask, leading to a moment both pivotal and transformative. Trask is arrested under accusations of treason, while Mystique’s heroism shifts public perception, sparking a cancellation of the Sentinel program.

Wolverine awakens in a reformed future surrounded by familiar faces: Iceman, Rogue, Colossus, Kitty, Beast, Storm, Jean Grey, Cyclops, and Xavier. Ultimately, Mystique’s shape-shifting leads her to impersonate Stryker and reclaim Wolverine.
