Woman on the Run

In San Francisco, artist Frank Johnson witnesses the gunshot murder of an important trial witness by a gangster seeking extortion money. The killer spots Frank and fires at him, creating a tense moment before police arrive. When police arrive, Inspector Martin Ferris realizes Frank could identify the killer in a lineup and orders protective custody.

As Frank is moved into protective custody, he notices the wall shadow with bullet holes and panics, realizing how close death nearly was. He secretly escapes to avoid being held any longer.

Inspector Ferris discusses the case with Eleanor Johnson and learns of a strained marriage and Frank's reluctance to reveal his life. Eleanor explains that Frank has a habit of running from trouble, complicating protective efforts.

Reporter Danny Legget insinuates himself into Eleanor's life under the pretense of aiding the search for Frank. He makes romantic advances, while Eleanor senses old feelings rekindling the longer Frank remains missing. Ferris and undercover officers continue to shadow Eleanor as she searches for Frank.

At a Chinese nightclub frequented by Frank, a waiter delivers a note from Frank to Eleanor, saying he will send another message with his location. Danny learns that Suzie, a dancer there, has a sketch of him given by Frank and steals the drawing.

Shortly after, Suzie falls from a window to her death, and nightclub staff refuse to believe she would kill herself. The death deepens the mystery surrounding Frank and the club.

At another bar, Eleanor finds another clue hidden in Frank's painting on the wall, deepening the sense that Frank is guiding her without directly revealing himself. The clue pushes her toward a specific location.

At Frank's department store workplace, Eleanor discovers a letter stating Frank is at 'the place where he first lost her.' She realizes the location points to the beach near the amusement park, setting up the final pursuit.

Eleanor and Danny rush to the beach where Frank is finishing a large sand sculpture, suggesting a final confrontation or reunion. The beach setting marks the culmination of the months-long pursuit.

Danny is revealed as the villain and confronts Frank at gunpoint on the sand. The tense showdown pits trust against treachery as the truth comes to light.

To escape the pursuing police and the chaos of the confrontation, Eleanor rides a terrifying roller coaster, hoping to stay ahead of danger and buy time for Frank.

Eleanor rushes to the scene after hearing a gunshot and discovers Danny's body floating in the water. She is tearfully reunited with Frank, closing the perilous chapter as they face an uncertain future together.
