Read the complete plot breakdown of Wendell & Wild (2022), including all key story events, major twists, and the ending explained in detail. Discover what really happened—and what it all means.

In Rust Bank, the cinematic adventure unfolds amidst a lively carnival setting where we meet young Kat Elliot (Lyric Ross), who shares a bond with her parents, Delroy ([Gary Gatewood]) and Wilma ([Gabrielle Dennis]). They run a flourishing brewery, yet they face ruthless threats from the affluent Klaxon family. As a storm brews, Wilma becomes increasingly anxious, but Delroy dismisses her fears. A fateful swerve off a bridge seals their tragic destiny when Kat’s terrified cries echo, leading to a calamity that leaves Kat haunted by loss and guilt for years.

In stark contrast to Kat’s turmoil, we are introduced to the darkly whimsical realm below, where the enormous demon Buffalo Belzer (Ving Rhames) commands his eerie amusement park, the Scream Faire, from his oversized frame. His mischievous twin sons, Wendell (Keegan-Michael Key) and Wild (Jordan Peele), engage in a peculiar beauty ritual for their father which sparks brief moments of joy, but their amusement quickly dissipates when they perceive Kat’s distressing vision.

Fast forward to the present, Kat’s journey leads her through a tumultuous experience in juvenile hall, where she is escorted by her handler, Ms. Hunter ([Tantoo Cardinal]). Arriving at a new school, RBC, the bridge that marked her life-changing event remains in ruins – a grim symbol of the Klaxons’ relentless control over Rust Bank. At RBC, she meets a spirited group of girls—Siobhan ([Tamara Smart]), Sweetie ([Ramona Young]), and Sloane ([Seema Virdi])—who embrace her, though Kat quickly feels alienated and grows irritated by their insistence on calling her “Kay-Kay.”

Amidst the bustling school atmosphere, observant Raul Cocolotl ([Sam Zelaya]) takes an interest in Kat’s struggles. Haunted by visions of her painful past, Kat tries to navigate this new chapter of her life—at one point saving Siobhan from a falling stone, only to realize the acts of selflessness often stem from her own frustrations. The plot thickens as she crosses paths with the mysterious Father Level Bests ([James Hong]), the charismatic headmaster funding the school, who unknowingly leads her into a haunting lesson set to unravel her hidden potential.

In an uncanny twist, Wendell and Wild learn from Bearz-a-bub ([Phoebe Lamour]) that Kat is destined to becomes their Hell Maiden, a revelation that ignites their enthusiasm for enlisting her unique abilities to resurrect their deceased parents. Through an intricate manipulation of her emotions, Kat sets out to find Bearz-a-bub and explore what lies in the depths of her past and her connections to those she has lost.

However, a sinister turn arises when the Klaxons, led by Lane and Irmgard ([David Harewood] and [Maxine Peake]), conspire against the town. As their plans evolve into more malevolent schemes, the undercurrents of Kat’s life interweave with the twins’ mischief, leading to the resurrection attempts involving heart-rending discoveries and soul-searching quests.

Within this chaotic tapestry, Kat must face her fears head-on. With help from Sister Helley (Angela Bassett), she embarks on a therapeutic journey confronting the immense weight of her memories. As the stories of the past collide with the overwhelming realities of the present, Kat discovers not only her own resilience but also the possibilities that come from friendship and shared struggle.

As the tension escalates between the factions of Rust Bank, old wounds are reopened, leading to pivotal moments where alliances are forged and tested. In a world brimming with demons, both literal and metaphorical, Kat embraces the opportunity for redemption and the chance to secure her future. The film crescendos through thrilling escapades—depictions of life, death, and everything in-between—culminating in resolution, a budding sense of hope, and a bright promise of what lies ahead for Kat and her newfound family.
