As the sun begins to set over the Central Park Zoo, the mighty lion, Samson, shares enthralling stories of his courageous adventures in the African wilderness with his inquisitive preteen son, Ryan. As the zoo gates close and the night envelops the space, the animals are granted freedom, allowing them to frolic and indulge in playful revelry. Joined by his loyal friends - the clever squirrel Benny, the graceful giraffe Bridget, the loveable yet clumsy anaconda Larry, and the mischievous koala Nigel - they embark on an exhilarating game of turtle curling, their laughter resonating through the crisp night air. However, chaos ensues when Ryan, along with his friends, inadvertently sets off a chaotic stampede, threatening to shatter the joyful atmosphere.

Tensions escalate between Samson and Ryan, leading to a heartbreaking confrontation that leaves Ryan feeling misunderstood. In a moment of impulsive determination, Ryan makes a secretive escape, slipping away just as his father attempts to extend a much-needed apology. Curiosity leads Ryan to sneak into a mysterious green intermodal container, believed to be destined for the wilds of Africa, unaware that this decision plunges him into a thrilling journey of self-discovery.

The search for their missing friend draws Samson and his loyal companions - Benny, Bridget, Larry, and Nigel - into an audacious adventure that stretches from the bright lights of Times Square to the shadowy depths of the city’s sewers. They encounter various colorful characters, including the sharp-witted pigeon Hamir, who proves to be a valuable ally in navigating their way.

After narrowly dodging danger while traversing the concrete jungle, the group crosses paths with streetwise alligator brothers Stan and Carmine, who generously offer essential guidance toward the city’s docks. As dawn breaks over the horizon, a daring plan is set in motion to liberate a tugboat from the harbor, resulting in a whirlwind of thrilling escapades.

Reuniting with Benny, who manages to join forces with a flock of geese, the group finds itself on the tugboat with Samson at the helm. Guided by the geese, who are attuned to their predicament, they embark on a spirited chase across the waterways of the city, eventually spotting Ryan’s ship sailing into the distance, filling them with awe and hope.

In a dramatic twist, the adventure takes Samson and his friends to Africa, where they unexpectedly face the looming threat of a near-erupting volcano, compelling a mass evacuation of local wildlife. In this exotic landscape, Ryan becomes lost in the dense jungle, prompting a frantic search by Samson. As his friends return to the ship, they face the realization that Samson’s survival skills may not be as honed as they believed, leading him to reveal his vulnerabilities in an emotional moment.

Meanwhile, Nigel faces a comical but dire fate as he is seized by a herd of wildebeest, led by Kazar, who mistakenly believes him to be a fabled hero known as “The Great Him.” The wildebeests cling to a prophecy that involves devouring a lion to shift the food chain’s balance, with Nigel caught in the middle of their absurd plan.

Bridget and Larry also find themselves in peril as they face the same fate planned for Nigel. Amidst all the chaos, Ryan hides in a towering ancient tree, only to come face-to-face with a flock of vultures. Just as danger seems imminent, Samson arrives to chase off the vultures, reuniting with Ryan briefly before they too are discovered by the wildebeest. In an unexpected turn of events, Samson reveals to Ryan that he once struggled with his own roar, mirroring his son’s current challenges.

The thrilling narrative escalates when the tree Ryan is sheltered in gives way, sending them tumbling down a cliff. With his father in peril, Ryan is captured and taken toward the volcano’s dangers as Samson fights to save his son.

Rallying support from an unexpected ally, Benny, who appears with a whimsical band of female German dung beetles, Samson finds renewed faith. It is revealed that Samson’s instincts have been manipulated by two clever chameleons intent on having him assist in a confrontation with Kazar. Empowered by their camouflage tactics, Samson manages to infiltrate the enemy stronghold, but the fiery threats soon compromise his disguise, leading to an intense showdown.

Seizing an advantageous moment, Ryan boldly uses a makeshift catapult to soar at Kazar, finally unleashing an awe-inspiring roar that resonates through the mountain ranges. This moment distracts Kazar, allowing Samson to take control and defeat him decisively. In a poignant interaction, Ryan expresses gratitude to Samson, regarding him as a father figure, softening the hearts of the surrounding wildebeests, who grow weary of Kazar’s tyrannical beliefs.

With newfound courage uniting them, Samson lets loose a powerful roar that scatters Kazar’s forces, leading the group and the wildebeests to escape the imminent eruption of the volcano behind them.
