This film weaves together a series of loosely connected short stories set in a futuristic landscape that, intriguingly, lacks the advanced technology one might anticipate. Instead, it features familiar devices like Alexa and flawed virtual reality headsets.
Story 1: The Last Mechanic
In the depths of space, we meet David, a mechanic portrayed by Thomas Jane, who finds himself in a perilous situation. While repairing a satellite, an unexpected space storm occurs, leaving him untethered and hurtling into the vastness of the cosmos. The absence of his ship or station raises unsettling questions about how he arrived in this predicament. Throughout the remainder of the film, David floats aimlessly, reflecting on his existence, engaging in conversations with the ship’s AI, and recording heartfelt messages for his daughter, Emma.
Story 2: The End Of The Line
Next, we encounter a struggling android dealer trying to offload his pre-owned androids. He introduces a potential customer to the Charlie android, played by Rupert Everett in a less-than-flattering elderly guise. Despite Charlie’s disarming presence, his antiquated humor and awkward demeanor repel her. Frustrated by the lack of interest, the dealer resorts to an extreme measure: euthanizing the Charlie android in an industrial press. The story closes with a poignant commentary on the nature of robotic assistance when it proves so fundamentally flawed.
Story 3: Alexa God
In a monotone existence marked by mediocrity, a young woman utilizes her Alexa device, which presents itself as a deity charging her for mundane “sins” like envy or swearing. This peculiar God Alexa stops functioning due to the same space storm, prompting her to seek a replacement at a Scientology hub. What she receives is a God 2.0—a model laden with intrusive ads and even more ridiculous penalties. The situation escalates to the point where she angrily discards it out of a window, exemplifying her frustration with both her life and technology.
Story 4: Shadow Walker The Stalker
The narrative dives into the obsessive behavior of a man who uses a VR application called Shadow Walker to stalk his ex-girlfriend. His need to record their shared experiences grows into an unhealthy obsession, leading to a restraining order on her part. Despite this, he confronts her at home, where a heated argument erupts, and she ultimately defends herself with a stun gun. The tale of love turned sour highlights the dangers of technology in personal relationships.
Story 5: We Immortal, You Ain’t
In a bizarre twist, a young man introduces his girlfriend to his family, warning her of his mother’s overbearing nature. As dinner unfolds, she receives a tirade on their family’s inexplicable immortality, leaving her as just a fleeting mortal. The tension climaxes as he steadfastly declares his love, even considering sacrificing his immortality for her. However, the atmosphere shifts dramatically when she returns from a smoke break to find them restraining him, erasing his memories entirely, which leaves her heartbroken and confused.
Story 6: Rent A Body
The unsettling final tale features an older man who desires to exploit a teenage girl’s body, leading her into a grim situation. Through a dubious arrangement facilitated by a prep woman, the teen must undergo a body exchange procedure with this perverse individual. As the story unfolds, the girl awakens to find herself trapped in a nightmarish scenario, where she struggles for control over her own life while grappling with the dark intentions of others.
As the stories intertwine, we see a cataclysmic backdrop—the Earth is besieged by meteors, resulting in widespread chaos. In a reflective moment, the last mechanic witnesses the destruction of his home planet and questions his reality. At this climax, he incredulously responds to the AI’s voice, stating, > “Are you f#@*ing kidding me!” The film concludes with a hauntingly introspective note, drawing viewers into the brink of despair.
