Unit 234

Laurie Saltair, a 25-year-old woman with degrees in Fine Arts and Philosophy, has found herself stuck in a life far from her artistic dreams. Instead of galleries and creative pursuits, she now works the night shift at her family’s abandoned self-storage facility located on the outskirts of town. The vast, gloomy maze of metal doors, dusty hallways, flickering fluorescent lights, and aging security monitors has become her new reality. Over time, she has become accustomed to the eerie silence, the faint sounds of mice scratching behind the walls, and the occasional presence of late-night renters who seem to come and go without much notice.

One stormy evening, as thunder rumbles in the background and the rain begins to pour, a man dressed in a gray hoodie arrives at the facility. His pallid complexion and jittery movements suggest he’s unusually nervous and desperate. He insists on gaining access to Unit 234, a sealed and apparently unpaid storage unit deep within the complex. Laurie, don Johnson, refuses to open the unit, but the man grows aggressive and disorderly before finally leaving, leaving Laurie with a strange sense of unease.

Curiosity gets the better of her as she checks the system and notices something odd—Unit 234 isn’t even listed in the records. Despite this, surveillance cameras show that the unit is real, large, heavily padlocked, and situated in a distant part of the facility’s wing. Driven by instinct, Laurie ventures down the silent corridor toward the mysterious unit. She carefully pries open the lock with bolt cutters and pushes the door open, revealing a chilling scene inside.

Inside the refrigerated crate, she finds a man, Clayton, strapped to a gurney. He’s shirtless, unconscious, and shivering violently. A deep incision runs down his side, exposing a roughly stitched surgical wound where his kidney has been removed. Blood crusts the edges of the wound, and the medical tape is peeling away from the poorly done stitches. Next to him, there’s a blood-stained cooler, empty IV bags, syringes, and ominous surgical tools—some looking used, others seemingly new.

Laurie quickly tries to call emergency services, but a sudden storm has knocked out the facility’s reception. Faced with an impossible choice, she manages to drag Clayton out of the unit and lock it behind her. As she takes a moment to catch her breath, headlights suddenly appear in the parking lot. A black van pulls up and four armed figures emerge with predatory precision. Laurie realizes, with growing horror, that these individuals are part of a black market organ trafficking ring, and Unit 234 was their secret operating room.

The intruders are cold, ruthless, and surgical in their approach. Their leader, Cruz, moves with unsettling calmness—like a doctor, but with murderous intent. Maria is brutal and unflinching, wielding a sawed-off shotgun and a gruesome medical saw. Their mission is to retrieve Clayton alive because they need his second kidney, and they will stop at nothing to accomplish it.

Laurie quickly hides Clayton in another storage unit and uses her knowledge of the facility to set traps—dropping shelves, sabotaging lights, and activating alarms. The dark, labyrinthine halls become a perilous battleground as she evades her attackers. One of the intruders, Ryder, is caught in one of her improvised snares and trips a security shutter, which crushes his skull and leaves his twitching body beneath the steel. Another, Kyle, traces Clayton’s blood trail and nearly captures him, but Laurie strikes him with a fire extinguisher, knocking him back into an elevator shaft where he falls onto the metal grid below. When she checks his body, his jaw is shattered and teeth are embedded in his throat, emphasizing the brutality of the scene.

In a desperate chase through the power tunnels beneath the storage facility, Maria corners Laurie. They engage in a brutal fight—Laurie stabbing Maria with a jagged curtain rod, and Maria retaliating by firing her shotgun, hitting Laurie in the shoulder. Nevertheless, Laurie manages to wrest the saw from Maria’s bag and drives it into her stomach. The sound of grinding flesh echoes as Maria screams and bleeds out, dying in a pool of her own blood.

Just as Laurie and Clayton attempt to escape through a storm drain, they are cornered by Cruz, who knocks Laurie unconscious. When she awakens, she finds herself chained to the gurney where Clayton had been held. Cruz, with unsettling calmness, prepares to perform a surgical extraction—explaining his plans to take Laurie’s kidney since Clayton’s second kidney is failing. Despite her fear, Laurie’s quick thinking allows her to seize a shard of broken mirror earlier and slice through her bonds. With determination, she stabs Cruz in the neck, causing him to choke on his own blood. Laurie then finishes him off with a precise slash across the throat with his surgical knife.

Seizing the moment, Laurie helps Clayton escape. As emergency services finally arrive, alerted by backup generators, paramedics take over the scene. The police soon uncover a grotesque network of illegal medical operations hidden within the facility. Laurie, battered and bloodied but alive, gives her statement amid the chaos and witnesses the grim scene of confiscated equipment and body bags. The experience has left an indelible mark on her, but it also awakens a fierce survival instinct—knowing she managed to save a man’s life and dismantle a monstrous operation. The traumatic night becomes a stark reminder of her resilience, determination, and the horrifying realities lurking beneath the surface of seemingly quiet places.
