Emerson, portrayed by John Cusack, is an expert in carrying out covert assassinations. After completing a job, he tracks down a witness and eliminates him. However, when he is faced with the witness’s young daughter, he cannot bring himself to carry out the act, leading to his partner, Michael Grey, played by Liam Cunningham, taking the life of the girl instead. This event shatters Emerson’s resolve, causing him to reject further assignments. As a result, Grey assigns him a new task: to protect Katherine, portrayed by Malin Akerman, at a secure location known as a Numbers Station — a facility responsible for broadcasting top-secret codes to agents in the field.
Initially, Emerson is less than enthusiastic about this protective duty, which he finds dreadfully boring. However, things take a drastic turn during a routine trip to the Station when they are ambushed. In a tense confrontation, Emerson manages to eliminate the attackers and informs central control. But, to his dismay, he learns that Katherine’s status has been compromised, forcing him to receive the order to “retire” her.
Stranded in the facility for four long hours while waiting for backup, Emerson grapples with his conscience as he refrains from harming Katherine and instead cares for her wellbeing. The situation becomes dire when they hear drilling sounds from outside, signaling that more attackers are trying to break in. As they investigate, they uncover the grim fate of the previous shift, discovering evidence that confirms the earlier codes were sent under duress. Emerson explains the importance of one-time cipher pads and the critical need to reverse unauthorized messages, which could potentially contain assassination orders targeting high-ranking officials—including Grey himself.
Their bond deepens as they work together to uncover the truth behind the coded messages. However, the situation escalates when one of the intruders, Max, and a previous protector, David, are found dead in the basement alongside a laptop containing critical assassination codes. As they strive to unscramble the messages, Emerson steps outside to retrieve a phone and seek help, only to encounter more danger from a man named Derne, played by Joey Ansah. In a fierce struggle, Emerson manages to kill Derne but suffers a series of further attacks as he fights to keep Katherine safe.
With the stakes rising, Meredith, portrayed by Lucy Griffiths, is injured but gives Emerson the final code to negate the kill order. In a bold move, he contacts Grey, falsely reporting that Katherine has been killed, while simultaneously setting explosives around the Numbers Station. With a desperate urgency, he attempts to whisk Katherine away to safety, but an unexpected car failure delays them. Just as hope seems lost, he manages to flag down a passing vehicle only to discover the driver is connected to the compromised central control.
A tense showdown ensues, but Emerson ultimately survives, managing to get Katherine to the hospital before losing consciousness. Days later, he awakens to find Katherine alive, and when Grey arrives, Emerson persuades him to allow them both to leave, as Katherine’s quick thinking had saved his life from a lethal plot. As Katherine stirs awake, she finds Emerson vigilantly watching over her, providing a sense of hope amidst the chaos they have survived.
