Lynette Vanessa Kirby is a woman juggling several jobs in Portland to hold onto a childhood home for herself, her mother Doreen Jennifer Jason Leigh, and her older brother Kenny Zack Gottsagen, who lives with Down syndrome. The weight of keeping the family together presses on her as she navigates a web of debt, duty, and difficult choices.

When the day comes to sign papers to secure the house at the bank, Doreen is a no‑show. Returning home, Lynette discovers that the money meant for the down payment—the $25,000—was spent on a new car. The revelation hits hard and sets off a chain of impulsive, reckless decisions that push her deeper into danger and desperation.

Desperation drives Lynette to contact a former client, Scott [Randall Park], hoping for a loan. He refuses, and in a moment of poor judgment she sleeps with him anyway. He offers nothing but scorn, then doubles his usual $500 as a final farewell. In a panic, Lynette steals his Mercedes, leaving behind a trail of angry voicemails as he discovers the car missing. She parks the car under a bridge, leaves one door ajar, and hurries away, trying to put distance between herself and the mounting consequences.

Seeking to fill the cash gap, Lynette turns to Gloria [Julia Fox], an escort and the mistress of a senator, who reluctantly parts with $500 from a safe. She also enlists Cody [Stephan James], a co‑worker and ex‑felon, to help crack the safebox for $400. Cody wants the deal to go down off‑site, and his demand for more money grows alongside the risk. When the truth comes out, Lynette confesses the stash belongs to a friend, and Cody threatens her until she confronts the reality of the danger they’ve walked into.

The escape into renewed family urgency follows a grim arc. Lynette hits Cody with her car, saving herself and Kenny, but leaving him injured and the bag behind. They return home with the night barely broken, and Kenny is upset by the turmoil. Yet Lynette steadies him with tenderness and pancakes, stressing the importance of sticking together as a family.

That night, Lynette awakens her ex, Tommy, hoping to sell what remains of the stash. He claims he lacks cash but knows a contact who could buy the cocaine for $3,000. A long, painful confrontation resurfaces as Lynette challenges Tommy about the abuse she endured at 16, and his response leaves her with a cold final directive—do not reach out again.

Meanwhile, a late‑night encounter with a buyer named Blake in the suburbs escalates. When Blake tries to coerce sex for part of the money, Lynette strikes him, searches for Kenny, and endures others’ attempts to hold her down as she fights to protect them. The chaos ends with Lynette falling through a glass table and being cast out, the tension of what’s left unsaid hanging in the air.

As dawn approaches, Lynette and Kenny slip back home. Doreen confronts her, and Lynette explains that she spent the entire night trying to replace the $25,000. Doreen reveals she doesn’t want the house and would rather see it burn, listing Lynette’s mistakes—including her past relationship with Tommy at 16. The cruel honesty stings, and Lynette tearfully asks why she wasn’t protected when she needed it most. Doreen then declares she will move with Kenny to Mona’s.

David [J. Claude Deering] calls to say he’s chosen another buyer who offered more for the house, a decision he makes after giving their family more chances than they can afford. In a quiet, conflicted moment, Lynette climbs into bed with Kenny, telling him she has to leave for a while but promises to visit. They both voice their love for each other, and she heads out, seeking a path forward.

Before she goes, Lynette leaves behind some cash and a note for Doreen, explaining that she fought for their family and asking her to look after Kenny. She vows to keep fighting, even as she steps away to chart a new course.
