In 2058, Rudolph Kenner is at a casino/strip bar in Kansas City when he learns his latest command: a zirconium mine on Mars was lost to rebel forces. He is ordered to complete the mission and to take care of his trainee Phil, son of a zirconium industry leader. The news sets the course for the dangerous journey ahead.

The next morning, Kenner, Phil, and Phil's girlfriend Sheila leave Kansas City and head east toward Oblivion, a desolate region once known as the Atlantic seaboard. Their mission is underway, and the trio faces a dangerous, lawless landscape.

Kenner finds a young Mutie stuck in a trap and returns her to her colony. Bandits attack the colony, killing Phil and capturing Kenner and Sheila. The safety of the Muties is shattered as violence erupts around them.

Kenner is brought to the Colosseum, the bandit base, and is confronted by Bishop who intends to kill him in a gladiator-style duel. Fortunately, Kenner escapes from the base with a group of Muties in a bandits’ car. The escape marks a turning point in his mission.

Back at the Mutie camp, Kenner explains his mission: to take radioactivity readings to determine if zirconium can be found around Oblivion, which is essential in fighting aliens from a parallel universe. Grace shares her backstory, revealing that her parents were eaten by subterranean cannibalistic mutants called Whities.

The Mutie camp is attacked by bandits. Kenner sits in the open and lures the attackers into the Mutie shelter, while the Muties hijack bandits’ vehicles. The attack ends with the shelter demolished and Elijah captured.

Uncle Lazarus, the Mutie spiritual leader, puts Kenner in charge and hints at an unfolding prophecy. Kenner is initially reluctant, but slowly accepts the responsibility. Lazarus then kills himself, signaling a new era for the Muties.

The Bishop uses radio to call a patrol, and Kenner answers back, pretending to be a bandit. He then decides to hijack the convoy and sneak into the Colosseum disguised as a patrol. The ruse paves the way for a dangerous infiltration.

On the journey toward the Colosseum, Kenner and Grace discuss the world he comes from and their growing connection. The conversation deepens their bond, culminating in a moment of intimacy.

The Muties arrive at the Colosseum; Elijah runs screaming from the convoy and is shot. A firefight erupts between the Muties and bandits as Kenner locates Sheila and other prisoners and searches for Bishop.

Kenner and the Muties corner Bishop, only to discover he is a Mutie himself. The confrontation ends with Bishop escaping during the clash, leaving Kenner and his allies to regroup and plan their next move.

Kenner writes back to his employers stating Oblivion is too radioactive to mine, so they would have to buy zirconium from the resident Muties. Grace tells Kenner she does not feel at home in the city, and Kenner agrees. The film ends with them driving back into Oblivion.
