In a bleak, near-future world shaped by a failed space-based defense system, a nuclear catastrophe wipes out millions and partitions society into two stark realities. The prosperous cities, run by hardline military regimes, stand in harsh contrast to the radioactive deserts where the survivors—now hardened into bands of violence and slavery—scramble to endure. Among the wreckage, the Muties, weaker mutated victims, move through the wasteland as a constant reminder of the catastrophe’s human cost.

In 2058, Rudolph Kenner arrives in Kansas City, a casino and strip bar serving as a temporary refuge for a man with a mission. He has just learned that a zirconium mine on Mars has fallen under rebel control, a blow that demands immediate action. His orders are clear: complete the mission and look after Phil, the son of a zirconium magnate, who travels with him. Phil, and his girlfriend Sheila, join the plan as dawn breaks and the trio heads east toward Oblivion, a desolate expanse that was once part of the Atlantic seaboard.

On the road, Kenner discovers a young Mutie trapped in a hunter’s snare and returns her to her people, a moment that underscores the fragile sympathy that still survives amid the brutality. The fragile peace is shattered when bandits raid the Mutie colony, killing Phil and capturing Kenner and Sheila. The capture lands them in the bandits’ base, a fortress known as the Colosseum, where the bandit leader Bishop has a chilling knowledge of Kenner’s mission and a deadly plan to end him in a gladiatorial confrontation. Kenner’s resolve is put to the test as he fights to survive and to protect the others.

Escape comes with a daring move: Kenner bolts from captivity in a stolen bandit vehicle and slips away with a group of Muties. Back at their camp, Kenner opens up to Grace, a compassionate Mutie who has become a key ally. He explains that his mission is to take radioactivity readings to determine whether zirconium can be found around Oblivion, a mineral crucial for fending off an alien threat from a parallel universe that once spurred scientists to create a zirconium bomb to destroy an alien starship. Grace shares her own painful memories, including a terrifying tale of her parents being consumed by subterranean, cannibalistic mutants known as “Whities.”

Rebuilding their camp after the attack, the Muties become a united force. They hijack the bandits’ vehicles and lead a breakout, while Kenner, exposed to the Mutie leadership, finds himself unexpectedly elevated to a guiding role by Uncle Lazarus, the Mutie spiritual figure. The revelation unsettles him at first, but a deeper sense of duty soon takes hold. Lazarus’s influence is decisive enough to shift Kenner into a position of leadership within the Mutie community, even as Lazarus’s self-inflicted death marks a grim turn in the prophecy the group believes in.

As the Mutie caravan reaches the Colosseum, a tense radio exchange reveals that Kenner’s enemies are still closing in. He answers a call pretending to be a bandit, using the ruse to guide a hijacked convoy toward the Colosseum under the cover of a patrol. In the tense moments that follow, Kenner and Grace share a quiet, intimate moment, a reminder of the human connections that persist even in a world where survival often trumps sentiment.

The Colosseum confrontation peaks with a fierce firefight. Elijah—a mysterious figure who had aided the bandits—bolts into the melee, and chaos erupts as the Muties clash with the bandits. Kenner locates Sheila among the prisoners and sets out in search of Bishop, who is revealed to be another Mutie, a twist that complicates loyalties and blurs the line between ally and foe. The Bishop escapes during the fray, leaving the Muties to grapple with a brutal setback.

In the aftermath, the Muties claim victory through ingenuity and courage, but the cost remains high. Back at a reflective moment, Kenner drafts a report to his employers, stating that Oblivion’s radioactivity makes mining untenable and that zirconium must be procured from the Muties who now inhabit Oblivion. Grace admits that the city’s world does not feel like home to her, and Kenner agrees that their future may lie with the Mutie community rather than the rigid order of the cities. The film closes with Kenner and Grace driving back toward Oblivion, a choice that signals a new beginning for both of them in a landscape still scarred by radiation and conflict.

Through its stark landscapes and escalating tensions, the story balances themes of duty, survival, and the uncertain bonds formed between outsiders and those living on the edge of society. It tracks a man’s reluctant transition from a mission-driven operative to a protector who must decide what life in Oblivion should look like for himself, Grace, and the Mutie people who have become his unlikely kin. In the end, the film leaves audiences with a difficult question about ownership of resources, the meaning of home, and whether hope can flourish in a world defined by scarcity and fear.
