Kenner is a mission-driven operative tasked with locating zirconium and supervising Phil. He navigates the brutal post-disaster world, forming uneasy alliances with Muties. After being captured and escaping with Muties, he becomes a de facto leader within the Mutie community and rethinks his mission's objectives, eventually writing back to his employers about Oblivion's radioactivity and the need to buy zirconium from the Muties.

Phil is the young trainee and son of a zirconium business leader, traveling with Kenner and Sheila. He embodies the stakes of the zirconium mission and is killed during a bandit attack, underscoring the cost of the pursuit and the dangers of Oblivion.

Sheila is Phil's girlfriend who travels with the group and is captured during the bandit attack. She remains a prisoner through portions of the conflict and is later among the prisoners Kenner rescues, representing the human cost of the wandering war.

Grace is a Mutie who becomes an ally to Kenner and explains her people’s history, including their traumatic encounters with other mutants. She and Kenner share a personal moment, and she helps steer the Mutie group through peril as they confront bandit forces.

Bishop is the bandit leader who commands the Colosseum assault and the looting of prisoners. He is a formidable antagonist who embodies the brutal, gladiatorial culture of Oblivion, and his identity as a Mutie complicates the power dynamics when revealed.

Uncle Lazarus is the Mutie spiritual leader who places Kenner into a prophetic role within their community. He embodies faith and fate in a harsh world, and his eventual suicide marks a dramatic pivot in the Mutie storyline.

Elijah is a stranger who helps the bandits and becomes a symbol of the unpredictable, dangerous ally ecosystem within Oblivion. He runs screaming during a key moment and is shot, illustrating the volatility of loyalties in this setting.
