Film students Heather, Mike, and Josh travel to Burkittsville to document the Blair Witch. They interview locals who recount the myth and the case of Rustin Parr. The locals warn of a malevolent presence rumored to affect those who investigate the forest.

They meet two fishermen who warn that the forest is cursed. They recount the story of Robin Weaver, a girl who disappeared in 1888 and returned claiming an old woman with feet never touching the ground. The warnings deepen the sense of danger.

The students hike to Coffin Rock, where five men were found slain in the 19th century; the bodies later disappeared. The visit reinforces the belief that something malign lingers in the woods. They document the site as part of their documentary.

They camp for the night in the forest and settle in for filming. As darkness falls, unsettling noises replace natural sounds, hinting at an unseen force. They press on despite the growing unease.

The next day they stumble upon an old graveyard with seven small cairns. Josh accidentally knocks one over, triggering tense reactions and a sense that someone is watching. Tension rises as they realize the trail is dangerous.

That night they hear sticks snapping around camp. The sounds escalate, suggesting they're not alone in the woods. They huddle, hoping the approaching dawn will bring safety.

In the morning they discover three cairns built beside their tent and Heather's map is missing. Mike admits he kicked it into a creek during a fight, revealing how frustration led to their disorientation. They realize they are lost.

They decide to head south with Heather's compass in an attempt to find their way back to the car. They encounter stick figures hanging from trees and increasingly eerie sounds, including children's laughter and a groan. By dusk, their sense of direction has become a desperate loop.

An unknown force shakes their tent, prompting them to flee into the forest and hide as dawn approaches. The sensation of being watched intensifies as they try to sleep. They survive the night but remain terrified.

At morning they return to camp to find Josh missing and their supplies rifled. Heather discovers Josh's absence is part of the terrifying pattern, while Mike tries in vain to locate him. They hear unsettling sounds and realize the danger is closing in.

Heather finds a bundle of twigs tied with fabric from Josh's shirt containing bloodied teeth and hair. It confirms a grim reality: Josh has been harmed and possibly killed. She chooses not to tell Mike, hoping to protect him.

That same night, Josh's calls draw them toward the abandoned ruins of Rustin Parr's house. Inside, the walls bear children's bloody handprints, intensifying the sense that the witch's power is real. They desperately search for Josh but are pulled toward danger.

Mike hears Josh's voice in the basement and rushes down, only to be assaulted by an unseen force. Heather's camera records Mike standing in a corner facing the wall, unresponsive as the force takes him. The unseen presence attacks Heather, and her camera captures the chaos until it cuts to black.

The footage ends shortly after the events, leaving Heather's final message and their fates unresolved. The film presents the found footage as evidence of a malevolent force that claimed the filmmakers. The enduring mystery of the Blair Witch continues to haunt the town.
