As the daring crew of Home Sweet Haven embarks on a journey to a secluded village in Moldova, their mission is to capture the stunning metamorphosis of Becky’s artist’s retreat. The team, consisting of Greg, Alex, and the rookie Sarah, collaborates with producer Kate and local entrepreneur Vladimir to bring this compelling narrative to fruition. However, the filming process quickly unravels as they face an array of calamities, starting with Greg and Sarah’s secretive excursion into the village’s funeral procession, which doesn’t go unnoticed. They are soon caught when Kate confronts them, leading to a chaotic scene that necessitates the calm intervention of a police officer.
Days go by, and the crew finds themselves navigating a minefield of disruptions ranging from suspicious stares to outright animosity from the locals. One particularly unsettling incident occurs when an elderly woman clandestinely enters Sarah’s hotel room to impart a grave blessing. Meanwhile, Greg and Alex have been covertly guarding a piece of damning footage showcasing Kate’s indiscretion with Becky’s boyfriend, Goran, captured six months earlier when the house was first acquired. They intend to leverage this information against Kate if necessary.
Vladimir captivates the crew with a chilling recollection of the village’s tormented history, narrating a tale about a mysterious plague that previously afflicted the town and the subsequent scapegoating of a reclusive woman. This grim narrative is illustrated vividly when Becky unveils a vivid mural in her cellar, encapsulating the very essence of the story they’ve been told.
As they approach what seems like the conclusion of their project, calamity strikes anew: Alex is bitten by an aggressive dog during playtime, prompting the crew to scramble for medical assistance at a local butcher’s shop before they can regroup for a final shoot the next day, all amidst ticking clocks as they ready to depart. The evening brings them to a local bar, where attempts at mending relations with the community falter when an intoxicated Sarah inadvertently ignites hostility with an inappropriate remark in the local dialect.
Determined to complete their filming at Becky’s home, the crew faces yet another setback when they find their vehicle damaged and unusable, forcing them to spend the night at Becky’s house while awaiting Goran’s return. In an effort to alleviate growing tensions, Vladimir heroically volunteers to go into town for a taxi, while Kate lays the blame for the turmoil on Sarah’s earlier blunder, spurring Sarah to reveal yet another shocking twist: she and Greg’s affair had been captured on tape.
Hours later, a horrifying discovery awaits when Becky and Sarah find Vladimir’s corpse displayed grotesquely atop an outdoor furnace. As terror flares, the crew locks themselves inside the house, striving to evade the encroaching threat outside. That night, Greg, finally opening up about a haunting experience in Afghanistan, recounts witnessing a Taliban attack on an all-girls school, a traumatic memory that drives Sarah to comfort him, leading to a tender shared moment amidst despair.
The following day arrives with even more distressing news: Kate is missing. While searching for her, the remaining crew encounters Kate’s brutalized body, in a shocking tableau strapped to the barn roof. Sarah’s keen observation reveals Goran’s vehicle nearby, leading her to unveil the sinister reality that Becky had been well aware of Goran’s betrayal and had been watching all along. The crew realizes they are ensnared in a plot of revenge orchestrated by Becky, targeting both Vladimir and Greg as punishment for their transgressions.
As chaos unfolds, they are besieged by the outraged villagers, forcing the crew to retreat to the basement, where Sarah uncovers a dark mural that eerily reflects their own tragic fate. The chilling imagery surrounds Becky, depicting her as a vessel of malignance, and it soon becomes clear that she is no mere artist but a sorceress, manipulating events to exact a brutal reckoning on the villagers.
The atmosphere thickens with sinister tension when she consumes blood from a ghastly vat, signalling her complete embrace of darkness. In a swift and horrific turn of events, Greg meets his end at Becky’s hands, prompting Sarah and Alex to flee into the wilderness, desperate for survival. However, their escape is short-lived as they come face-to-face with a furious mob, leading to a catastrophic conclusion when the police officer delivers a fatal blow to Sarah.
Becky again emerges, unleashing her magical wrath on the villagers with unrestrained fury, reducing them to mere shadows of their former selves. As the last vestiges of life are stripped away, Becky turns her attention to Alex, demanding he disseminate the horrifying footage of her massacre to the outside world before vanishing into obscurity. The film ends on a haunting note, with Alex, drenched in blood and forever altered, grappling with the nightmarish experiences he has witnessed and pondering how to convey the unfathomable horror to his boss.
