On Sunday, March 3, 1946, the quiet town of Texarkana, Arkansas is shaken to its core when Sammy and Linda Mae decide to spend the evening parking in their car under the stars. As the night unfolds, a sinister figure wearing a hood sneaks up to their vehicle, causing chaos when he pries open the car hood and disrupts their peaceful moment. In a panicked rush, Sammy attempts to start the engine, but his efforts are fruitless as the shadowy figure shatters the driver’s side window with a pipe, viciously pulling Sammy out of the vehicle. Linda Mae’s scream pierces the night, but soon the ominous silence settles again.

The following day, the townsfolk awaken to a grim discovery—Linda Mae lies gravely injured on the roadside, alongside Sammy, who is also in critical condition. At a nearby hospital, a doctor reveals the horrifying details of the attack to Deputy Ramsey and Sheriff Barker, stating that Linda Mae had been “bitten” and “literally chewed” in multiple places. With growing dread, Police Chief Sullivan orders a warning for the public about the dangers of parking in secluded areas, while Ramsey expresses his fear that the enigmatic assailant will strike again.

Just weeks later, on March 24, another couple, Howard and his girlfriend Emma Lou, unknowingly become the next victims. Amid a downpour, they hear gunshots that echo through the woods. When Ramsey patrolling the area stumbles upon Howard’s abandoned car, panic sets in as he realizes something is terribly wrong. He discovers the lifeless bodies of Howard and Emma Lou, both brutally shot numerous times. From the shadows, the hooded killer drives away in their vehicle, leaving the town reeling from the brutal news.

As fear grips the community, who begin to dread the setting sun, Captain Morales, a notable criminal investigator and Texas Ranger, arrives to spearhead the manhunt for the infamous killer, now dubbed “The Phantom.” To maintain order, Morales implements a town-wide curfew while agents from the FBI flock to Texarkana, eager to lend their assistance. However, the situation becomes chaotic as numerous individuals come forward, falsely claiming responsibility for the heinous acts, while the desperate townspeople scream for safety.

On April 14, predicting the killer will strike again, Ramsey warns Morales that the timeline is tightening. The local law enforcement sets up bait, positioning officers disguised as couples in parked cars to lure the killer out. That same evening, during the high school prom, the atmosphere is charged with tension. As Peggy and her boyfriend Roy seize a moment of intimacy, an unexpected terror unfolds. Suddenly, the Phantom emerges, dragging Roy from their vehicle before mercilessly attacking both him and Peggy. In an especially chilling moment, the killer brands Peggy’s trombone with a knife, using it as a sickening weapon against her.

In the aftermath of this brutal encounter, Morales grapples with the terror that has befallen the town, vocalizing his incredulity that the killer could elude capture despite the watchful eyes of law enforcement on the premises. As the investigation unfolds, a doctor Kress discusses the disturbing psychology of the Phantom, suggesting the driver finds perverse pleasure in the killings, likening it to a twisted game.

Time passes, but the Phantom’s reign of terror continues unabated. Helen, a woman going about her daily life, unwittingly becomes the next target. While shopping, she is trailed by the killer who waits for the opportune moment to strike. The chilling reality occurs at her homestead, where her husband Floyd becomes the Phantom’s next victim, shot execution-style. As Helen narrowly escapes a similar fate, she finds herself embroiled in a terrifying game of survival.

Weeks turn into months as law enforcement, aided by Bloodhounds, scour the woods and swamps seeking any sign of the elusive killer. Finally, they catch a glimpse of the Phantom near an old quarry, leading to a harrowing chase through the forest. A critical shot during the pursuit hits the assailant’s leg, offering a glimmer of hope—but despite the injury, the Phantom manages to vanish into the wilderness once more.

Eventually, as the fear subsides, the mystery remains unresolved. The voice-over recounts how the killer’s identity was never uncovered, leaving behind a lingering sense of unease among the citizens of Texarkana. In a haunting cliffhanger, during the Christmas season of 1976, the film “The Town That Dreaded Sundown” premieres, echoing the chilling legacy of the unsolved Phantom case, with ghostly traces of the killer appearing once more.
