The following evening, a ball for Johanna hints that she finds Karl’s formal, reserved manner hard to warm up to, setting the stage for a quiet clash between duty and affection.

The mood at home grows more pressing as Queen Mathilda and the king discuss the shaky alliance. Mathilda urges Karl to shed his chill and discover warmth and charm, even if it isn’t his instinct. To steer him toward this softer side, the royal household summons Prof. Juttner, Karl’s tutor, who argues that real grace comes from living among people rather than from cursory lessons. He suggests a bold plan: Karl should be sent to Heidelberg, his alma mater, to immerse himself in ordinary life, while Juttner and the diligent royal valet, Lutz, accompany him.

In Heidelberg, the trio take rooms at an inn run by Joseph Ruder. Karl is immediately drawn to Ruder’s bright niece, Kathie, but their first encounter is imperfect—Karl’s impulse to kiss her is rebuffed, and Kathie’s initial resistance foreshadows the friction that may follow. Karl refuses to abandon his Westphalian friends, and the duel that ensues ends with Karl besting Von Asterburg in a sword fight. The duel ends with a handshake between the two men, yet Kathie remains distressed by the fraternal respect that has formed on the other side and by the rift it creates with her world.

A period of reconciliation follows, and a carnival night offers Karl a chance to escape with Kathie. But Prime Minister Von Mark arrives with grave news: the king is ill and wishes to see Karl. Karl returns to Karlsburg, promising Kathie that he will come back after attending to his duties, only to face a harsher reality—the king’s illness deepens, and the inevitable death soon follows. The monarch’s passing reshapes Karl’s sense of duty, and the prince agrees to proceed with the marriage to Johanna, even as he wrestles with his true feelings for Kathie.

Traveling toward Nordhausen for the royal wedding, Karl makes a final, poignant decision: he orders the train to halt in Heidelberg so he can bid Kathie farewell at Ruder’s inn. The heart-wrenching goodbye marks the moment when Karl must choose between the obligations of a throne and the life he might have with Kathie, a choice that will shape the future of Karlsburg.

In the end, the story unfolds as a careful examination of duty, identity, and personal happiness, following a prince who learns that leadership often means balancing public responsibilities with private desires, and that the path to real warmth may lie outside the palace walls.
