Upon learning that the Venetian archduke Archduke Paul ‘Gustl’ Gustave will attend her next performance, the ballerina Fanni Kerner quickly hatches a plan to win the attention of a wealthy bachelor. She sets her sights on the formidable Willy Fitch, a carriage driver who seems content with his simple life, and she frames her pursuit as a matter of patriotic duty, hoping to win both prestige and security through a marriage of convenience. Her confidante and fellow dancer, Lisl Gluck, warns her to stay loyal to Willy, but the lure of high society and the chance to be seen with the archduke begin to pull Fanni in a direction she hadn’t anticipated.

Meanwhile, the man at the center of everything, Archduke Paul ‘Gustl’ Gustave, finds himself unexpectedly drawn to Lisl Gluck. He is under pressure to enter a politically advantageous marriage with Countess Rafay, a match arranged for state reasons that cannot be undone. Yet his interest in Lisl grows, and he makes a troubling choice: to keep Lisl as his secret lover, postponing any public display of affection in favor of private moments and stolen conversations that feel dangerously intimate.

Lisl, who is already engaged to a struggling ballet producer, is invited to a dinner at the archduke’s villa by his loyal valet, Baron Szereny. Despite her initial reluctance, she agrees to attend, seeking a possible future in an entirely different life. When Fanni learns that the archduke has chosen Lisl over her, she informs Willy that she is now free to marry. Willy, however, is far from eager to marry at all; he sings a lighthearted tribute to his horse, Mitz, and brushes off the idea of settling down with a wife, a moment that adds a touch of irony to the unfolding drama.

At the palace, Lisl endures a rigorous physical inspection conducted by Szereny to test whether she meets Paul’s exacting standards. The procedure feels invasive and demeaning to her, a sharp reminder of the power the archduke’s position wields over personal lives. When she finally meets Paul, she finds him just as emotionally distant as his public image suggests. He makes it clear that their relationship will not be built on love; she will be kept in special quarters and expected not to disturb him in his daily routines. Yet Paul is surprised to discover that Lisl neither seeks romance in a conventional sense nor wishes to be dominated by a rigid, loveless arrangement.

Evening娱乐 turns toward social games as Paul spends time with Countess Rafay, while Lisl invites Toni Berngruber and Willy to join the private gathering. Paul’s stern exterior softens a touch when he hears Lisl sing, a small, human moment that hints at what could be if circumstances allowed. The mood shifts when the two lovers find themselves stranded on a carnival Ferris wheel, forced to spend the night together, and the moment crystallizes their deepening bond.

The following day, Toni returns, conflicted and suspicious, accusing Lisl of reneging on their planned marriage. Yet his jealousy gives way when he learns that Paul intends to finance Lisl’s ballet, and a pragmatic mercy takes hold—Toni permits the romance to continue under the shadow of the archduke’s ambitions. The possibility of marriage to Lisl becomes a political instrument, a tool that could save a kunstenaar’s career and advance a dynastic plan all at once.

As the plot thickens, the Emperor himself weighs in. Emperor Franz Josef insists that the arranged marriage proceed, a decision that places public duty above private longing. Faced with the inevitability of separation, Paul tries to prepare Lisl for a future that may never be theirs. Szereny consoles the devastated young singer, and after a tearful farewell dinner, Paul asks Lisl for a final kiss—then asks her to turn away and never look back, a dramatic closing gesture that seals the fate of their illicit romance while leaving the door open to what might have been under different skies.
