Upon learning that the Venetian archduke Archduke Paul ‘Gustl’ Gustave will attend her next performance, the ballerina Fanni Kerner quickly hatches a plan to win the attention of a wealthy bachelor. She sets her sights on the formidable Willy Fitch, a carriage driver who seems content with his simple life, and she frames her pursuit as a matter of patriotic duty, hoping to win both prestige and security through a marriage of convenience. Her confidante and fellow dancer, Lisl Gluck, warns her to stay loyal to Willy, but the lure of high society and the chance to be seen with the archduke begin to pull Fanni in a direction she hadn’t anticipated.

Meanwhile, the man at the center of everything, Archduke Paul ‘Gustl’ Gustave, finds himself unexpectedly drawn to Lisl Gluck. Szereny consoles the devastated young singer, and after a tearful farewell dinner, Paul asks Lisl for a final kiss—then asks her to turn away and never look back, a dramatic closing gesture that seals the fate of their illicit romance while leaving the door open to what might have been under different skies.
