In a Swedish town at the turn of the 20th century, a widowed lawyer, Frederick Egerman, is trying to keep his life steady while his marriage to his younger wife, Anne Egerman, frays at the edges. Yet after the performance, Desiree invites Frederick to her dressing room, where old emotions flare and the two rekindle something that seems destined to disrupt the present order.

Desiree’s life is layered: she tours Europe in play after play, and her daughter Fredericka Armfeldt lives with Desiree’s mother, Madame Armfeldt, at a country estate. Desiree is growing tired of the actress’s life and contemplates settling down, setting her sights on Frederick despite his marriage. Desiree’s married lover, Count Carl-Magnus Mittelheim, arrives and immediately clashes with Frederick, testing both men and their loyalties. Desiree pretends that Frederick is Madame Armfeldt’s personal lawyer, an assertion that Carl-Magnus refuses to swallow, and he reports the encounter to his wife, Charlotte Mittelheim. Charlotte, meanwhile, means to expose the affair, but Anne decides not to confront Frederick.

Seeking an advantage, Desiree persuades her mother to invite the Egerman family to the country estate for a weekend, hoping to entice Frederick away from Anne. Anne is outraged by the invitation, yet Charlotte urges her to go, advising that she should go in and sabotage Desiree’s plans. The tension between Desiree and Charlotte remains palpable as Carl-Magnus learns of the gathering and makes it his mission to confront Frederick, a confrontation that promises danger for everyone involved.

The Egermans and the Mittelheims drive to the estate with Petra, the loyal maid, in tow. There, Desiree is surprised to see Carl-Magnus and his wife arriving, but she hosts the weekend anyway. Erich, unable to bear the atmosphere, confides in Fredericka that his feelings for Anne are real and impossible to act on.

At dinner, the two households collide in a flurry of sharp wit and muted envy, and Erich’s despair reaches a tragic peak as he rushes outside and attempts to take his own life. Fredericka helps Anne to understand the truth of Erich’s affection, and the two share a compassionate moment that inflames their own hidden longings; they briefly kiss and decide to run away together. In the quiet that follows, Desiree reveals her own longing to be with Frederick, but he admits that his commitment to Anne remains strong even as he acknowledges a part of him drawn to Desiree.
