Mary Rafferty, Greer Garson, an Irish immigrant, lives in Pittsburgh in 1873 with her crippled father Pat [Lionel Barrymore] and her sister Kate Shannon Geraldine Wall. Mary learns she has been hired as a housemaid for William Scott, a steel mill owner Donald Crisp; this new path promises independence, but Pat’s disapproval runs deep, rooted in his own hard-won labor years at the mill.

On Mary’s first day, Paul Scott [Gregory Peck] arrives home from London and is greeted by his mother, Clarissa Scott Gladys Cooper, and his siblings Ted Scott [Marshall Thompson], Constance Scott [Marsha Hunt], and William Scott Jr. [Dan Duryea]. The household welcomes him warmly, and the two families begin to rub elbows over dinner and conversation. At the mill, Paul pushes to modernize the furnace to yield finer steel, a goal that excites him personally as he notices Mary’s quiet strength and steady presence at the house. Paul’s friend Jim Brennan [Preston Foster] introduces him to a furnace model Mary has helped with, but Pat’s sternness makes Paul step back, revealing a rift between the older generation’s skepticism and the younger man’s ambitions.

Mary’s loyalty does not go unnoticed. Clarissa, impressed by Mary’s steady servitude, invites her aboard a cruise to Boston for William Jr.’s wedding. It’s there, on the decks, that Mary and Paul share a kiss and admit a growing affection that defies the boundaries of class and duty.

Months pass, and the feelings harden into love. Paul, now certain of his future, proposes marriage to Mary, though the idea of a housemaid marrying into a mill family gives her pause. Meanwhile, Constance reveals her secret marriage to Giles, the Earl of Moulton John Warburton, to her parents, and with Clarissa’s blessing, Mary accompanies them to England. The departure is bittersweet; Mary says farewell to her family but not to Paul.

Two years later, a letter from Paul arrives. He writes that the mill workers have gone on strike and that his father is suffering from pneumonia. Mary’s heart weighs heavy with the thought of leaving and the fear of what such a union might mean; Constance suggests Mary should reply, but Mary cannot bring herself to write back.

Back in Pittsburgh, Paul’s social world has shifted. He is in a loveless relationship with Louise Kane, while Clarissa reveals to her husband that Paul is in love with Mary. He soon sends for Mary to return, and together they confront the past and the hope for a future together. Upon their return, Clarissa grants her blessing to their union, and Mary and Paul renew their romance with a renewed sense of purpose.

The strike escalates. Jim Brennan leads a labor action that grows violent, and William Scott’s plan to recruit strikebreakers only compounds the tension. At a pivotal meeting, Mary arranges a reconciliation between the workers and the Scotts, and William agrees to recognize the union—an auspicious moment that feels like a turning point for the mill and its workers. But violence erupts as strikebreakers arrive, killing Pat and William and shattering the lives around the milling community.

Grief stays with Mary as she confronts the possibility of never marrying Paul. Ten years go by, and Paul has married Louise Kane, becoming a father to a young son. Clarissa, now elderly, sells her business share to Mary, trusting her to carry on the mills’ legacy, and soon after Clarissa dies. In a final council, Paul’s siblings vote to sell their shares, but Mary persuades Constance to hold onto hers. In the end, Paul leaves Louise and returns to Mary, choosing the life they had built together over the one that had begun to divide them.
