Their cheerful mood is tempered by a quiet anxiety—when a diner waitress casually asks why Ryan hasn’t proposed yet, he evasively changes the subject, and the diner walls carry a reminder of a missing man named Jeff. The moment hints at danger lurking outside their immediate plans. Their car won’t start when they try to leave, pressing them into an uneasy delay. A local mechanic named Rudy promises a fix by the next day, but the longer wait gnaws at them. A kindly, hidden thread of small-town life unfolds as a waitress named Ema Horvath drives the couple to a remote AirBnB cabin in the woods, a place that feels both serene and unsettling, a perfect stage for the night to come.

In the cabin, the quiet is punctured by an ominous rapping at the door. The enigmatic visitor, shrouded in shadow, asks about “Tamara,” and the couple’s denial only deepens the chill. The atmosphere tightens when Ryan, realizing he left his inhaler in the car, heads back to the shop. On the road, Rudy nearly mistakes him for a thief, but Ryan secures the inhaler and a bit of food on the way back. The two lovers awaken to find themselves bound side by side, their chances slim as Scarecrow and the others close in. In a hesitant, desperate moment, Ryan asks Maya to marry him, and she accepts the glimmer of hope amid the terror. The killers’ cruelty is unrestrained: Scarecrow stabs Ryan, and Pin-Up Girl supplies the knife that finishes Maya, kicking her aside as they declare their blunt, chilling reason for the night’s carnage—“Because you’re here.” The Grinders of fear retreat into the night, and only the sound of distant sirens suggests a semblance of justice arriving just too late.
