Deep in the woods, a frantic escape unfolds as Jeff Morell is chased by The Strangers—Scarecrow, Dollface, and Pin-Up Girl—before the masked intruders close in with their brutal resolve and leave a sense of dread in their wake.

Elsewhere, the couple Madelaine Petsch as Maya and Froy Gutierrez as Ryan are celebrating five years on a cross‑country drive. Their cheerful mood is tempered by a quiet anxiety—when a diner waitress casually asks why Ryan hasn’t proposed yet, he evasively changes the subject, and the diner walls carry a reminder of a missing man named Jeff. The moment hints at danger lurking outside their immediate plans. Their car won’t start when they try to leave, pressing them into an uneasy delay. A local mechanic named Rudy promises a fix by the next day, but the longer wait gnaws at them. A kindly, hidden thread of small-town life unfolds as a waitress named Ema Horvath drives the couple to a remote AirBnB cabin in the woods, a place that feels both serene and unsettling, a perfect stage for the night to come.

In the cabin, the quiet is punctured by an ominous rapping at the door. The enigmatic visitor, shrouded in shadow, asks about “Tamara,” and the couple’s denial only deepens the chill. The atmosphere tightens when Ryan, realizing he left his inhaler in the car, heads back to the shop. On the road, Rudy nearly mistakes him for a thief, but Ryan secures the inhaler and a bit of food on the way back. The locals’ friendliness feels off, a misdirection that heightens the sense of foreboding.

Back at the cabin, Maya experiences a more intimate horror. A loud knock returns, and she glimpses Scarecrow in the doorway, followed by the unsettling sight of Dollface’s mask in another room. Maya hides in a closet, terrified, while Ryan returns to calm her and later discovers a disturbing clown portrait that seems to foreshadow what’s to come. Dinner is cut short when they discover a dead bird hung up with its throat slit, its blood dripping onto their meal and space, a grotesque sign of how little their safety means here. Scarecrow lunges at the door with an axe, forcing them to barricade the bedroom just as the door buckles under the creature’s weight. The attack is halted only by the attackers’ momentary retreat, leaving the couple shaken but alive.

The pair scramble to arm themselves and seek any possible escape. While crawling under the floor, Maya injures her hand on a nail, forcing them to pause and tend to the injury before continuing. When the Strangers withdraw, Ryan pries the nail free and helps Maya out, but the danger remains imminent. The assault resumes as Pin-Up Girl and Dollface press their presence on Maya, while Ryan fights back with the shotgun he finds, managing to fend off one attack but realizing the threat persists. They stumble outside, hoping to seize an advantage and slip away, only to be met by another brutal interruption.

Ryan hears footsteps on the porch and fires, thinking he has ended Scarecrow’s threat, but in a horrifying twist, he has killed Joe, the house’s owner, a death that leaves him horrified and trembling. Maya tries to keep him grounded as they search for a way to leave behind the carnage, desperate to steal Joe’s car to flee. The Strangers smash the car with a truck, trapping Ryan’s leg and forcing Maya to run. She flees into the woods, fighting to call the police, but the signal slips away just as she spots Jeff’s decayed corpse, a grim reminder that danger has followed them here. Dollface appears, knocking Maya unconscious and dragging her away, her fate suddenly uncertain.

Ryan battles the remaining threat, finding Pin-Up Girl and aiming his shotgun. She shrieks and taunts him, and Scarecrow arrives to strike him down with the axe butt, leaving Ryan unconscious and the fate of Maya hanging in the balance. The two lovers awaken to find themselves bound side by side, their chances slim as Scarecrow and the others close in. In a hesitant, desperate moment, Ryan asks Maya to marry him, and she accepts the glimmer of hope amid the terror. The killers’ cruelty is unrestrained: Scarecrow stabs Ryan, and Pin-Up Girl supplies the knife that finishes Maya, kicking her aside as they declare their blunt, chilling reason for the night’s carnage—“Because you’re here.” The Grinders of fear retreat into the night, and only the sound of distant sirens suggests a semblance of justice arriving just too late.

Maya awakens in a hospital bed, and there, she finds Scarecrow lying beside her—a grim postscript that promises a continuation rather than a conclusion. TO BE CONTINUED
