The Small One

In the Galilean countryside near Nazareth, a young boy and his father own four donkeys, including an old and weak donkey named Small One. The boy takes care of Small One, helping him carry small sticks, showcasing the bond between them. The setting highlights their simple life in the Herodian kingdom.

The boy's father informs him that he must sell Small One because he cannot do enough work to justify his care costs. The boy is devastated by this news and volunteers to take Small One to the market himself. The father agrees, emphasizing the need to get one piece of silver for the sale.

Early in the morning, the boy begins his journey to sell Small One at the local market. They are initially tricked by a Roman guard into visiting a tanner's shop, but they soon leave upon realizing his true intent was to buy donkey hides. Their trip is marked by uncertainty and hope.

As they wander through the town, various townspeople, merchants, and shop owners show no interest in purchasing Small One. Despite their efforts to find a buyer, they face repeated rejection, highlighting the donkey's poor condition and the boy's desperation.

The boy leads Small One into a horse auction, attempting to sell him. The auctioneer dismisses Small One as a scrawny donkey not suited for the stage, poking fun at the boy. The scene underscores the boy's hope and the donkey's humble stature.

When the auctioneer tries to sit on Small One, the donkey unexpectedly buck and kick, overpowering him and causing the stage to collapse. This lively act surprises everyone and temporarily revives the boy's optimism, showing Small One's hidden strength and spirit.

Fleeing from the failed auction, the boy and Small One sit on the street corner, overwhelmed and crying. Their hopelessness reflects their struggles and the emotional bond between them amidst their disappointment.

A kind stranger approaches the boy, expressing interest in purchasing Small One. He needs a gentle donkey to carry his wife to Bethlehem, and promises to take good care of him. He offers the boy one piece of silver, which the boy accepts.

The boy watches anxiously as Small One, now with his new owner, begins his journey towards Bethlehem with the couple. The scene is marked by a bright star appearing in the sky, symbolizing hope and a new beginning for the donkey.
