The Small One (1978) – Full Plot Summary & Ending Explained

Read the complete plot breakdown of The Small One (1978), including all key story events, major twists, and the ending explained in detail. Discover what really happened—and what it all means.

In the serene countryside near Nazareth, in the kingdom of Herod, a young boy and his father share a modest life caring for four donkeys. Among them is Small One, an aging and frail donkey who can no longer carry the heavy loads of firewood the boy’s father typically gathers. Despite his old age and weakened state, the boy shows kindness and concern for Small One, carefully loading him with the smallest sticks and helping him along.

One evening, the boy’s father makes a difficult decision — he must sell Small One because the donkey can no longer produce enough to justify the expense of caring for him. Feeling heartbroken, the boy volunteers to take Small One to the marketplace, hoping to find him a gentle and caring owner. The father agrees and tells the boy that he will sell Small One for just one piece of silver, hoping it will be enough to help the donkey find a new home.

The following morning, the boy and Small One set out toward the city’s market, but their journey is filled with unexpected challenges. They are initially misled by a Roman guard who tricks them into visiting a local tanner, only to discover that the man’s real intention is to buy donkey hides. Frightened and confused, they leave hurriedly. As they wander the bustling streets, they meet various townspeople, shop owners, and merchants, all of whom show little interest in buying Small One. The donkey’s old and scrawny appearance makes it difficult to find a buyer.

Eventually, the boy brings Small One to a horse auction, where the crowd and auctioneer dismiss him as just another weak donkey. The boy insists, however, that Small One is “good enough to be in a king’s stable,” which sparks laughter and teasing from the crowd. The auctioneer, trying to demonstrate his dominance, attempts to sit on Small One, but the donkey unexpectedly bucks and kicks, throwing the auctioneer off and causing him to stumble and fall into the stage. This amusing and spirited act prompts the crowd to laugh even more.

Distressed and hopeless, the boy and Small One sit at a street corner, tears streaming down their faces. As they lament their situation, a kind man approaches them. He asks if Small One is for sale and, upon hearing the boy’s story, offers to buy the donkey to carry his wife to Bethlehem. The man promises to take good care of Small One, and he offers just one piece of silver — the boy’s agreed price. Moved by the man’s compassion, the boy agrees and says farewell to Small One. He watches as the man and his wife, along with Small One, begin their journey to Bethlehem under a shining star that appears in the night sky, symbolizing hope and new beginnings.

This heartfelt story focuses on themes of kindness, sacrifice, and the gentle strength of compassion, capturing a meaningful moment in a humble life that resonates with the timeless spirit of caring and hope.
