Charlie hides the horn because he's conflicted about returning to Heaven. After experiencing disillusionment with the afterlife, he's drawn to staying on Earth, particularly because of his growing feelings for Sasha and his connection to David. Hiding the horn in a lobster trap gives him time to figure out what he really wants, staying on Earth or returning to his celestial duties.

Earlier in the tavern, Charlie admits to Itchy that Heaven feels routine and draining, showing his reluctance to return.

Charlie returns Gabriel's Horn to Annabelle in exchange for a new life. After defeating Red and restoring heavenly order, Annabelle grants him permission to return to Earth as a living dog rather than remaining in Heaven or being stuck as a ghost. This new life allows him to stay on Earth permanently with Sasha.

Red, secretly a large demonic cat, planned to use Gabriel's Horn to imprison Heaven's angels in Alcatraz and open a permanent portal between the human world and Hell. This would have allowed demonic forces to enter Earth freely. Red manipulate d both Charlie and Carface to execute this scheme, using Carface's greed and Charlie's concern for David.

Red is introduced as a mysterious fortune-teller who grants Carface a magical collar, hinting at hidden motives.

Itchy decides to stay in Heaven because he finds contentment there. While Charlie wanted to return to Earth for Sasha and a new adventure, Itchy felt at peace in the afterlife and chose to remain with Annabelle. This reflects their different desires, Charlie seeks a second chance at life, while Itchy has made peace with his eternal situation.

Although Itchy misses their earthly adventures, he expresses appreciation for the heavenly companionship throughout the mission.

Charlie uses his one miracle from Annabelle to grant Sasha the ability to converse with David. This miracle appears to create a special connection that allows David to perceive both Sasha and Charlie, even though they're technically ghosts. David interprets this as proof that Charlie is his guardian angel.

Annabelle explicitly grants them one miracle to aid in their mission, which Charlie applies to bridge the communication gap.

Carface is sent back to Hell along with Red. The film reveals that Carface sold his soul in exchange for the magical collar that gave him a physical form on Earth. When Charlie defeats Red and uses the horn to free the angels, both villains are overthrown and banished to Hell, ending their threat.

Carface's mysterious collar is established early, with no clear explanation of how he obtained such power.

Charlie and Itchy were ghosts because they had returned from Heaven without completing their mission immediately. As spirits, they couldn't interact with the physical world, walking through doors, being seen by regular people, until they obtained the magical collars. The collars, originally given to Carface by Red and somehow acquired by Charlie and Itchy, temporarily granted them physical forms.

Upon arriving in San Francisco, they immediately discover they cannot interact with the physical world and are essentially invisible to ordinary people.

David ran away from home because he feared his father and stepmother would love him less once their new baby was born. He expressed this fear to Charlie after a failed street performance, revealing deep insecurity about being replaced. This emotional backstory makes his bond with Charlie significant, Charlie becomes a temporary guardian figure who promises to return him home safely.

David's anxiety about his family situation is revealed at the rooftop scene, where he confides his fears about the impending birth.

Charlie regains Gabriel's Horn during the battle with Red and uses it to free the angels who were imprisoned in Alcatraz. The horn's divine power reverses Red's spell, releasing the angels from their captivity and allowing them to return to Heaven. This act also closes the hellish portal Red had opened.

Red uses the horn to trap the angels, establishing that the same horn can undo the trapping when wielded by someone with good intentions.

Carface kidnaps David as leverage to force Charlie to hand over Gabriel's Horn. Since Charlie had hidden the horn and refused to return it to Heaven immediately, Carface used the boy as a bargaining chip. He ordered Charlie to deliver the horn to Red on Alcatraz Island in exchange for David's safety.

The earlier scene where Charlie hides the horn creates the stakes for this kidnapping, Carface knows Charlie cares about the boy.
