Nestor, the Long-Eared Christmas Donkey

The Roman soldiers arrive at the stable looking to buy donkeys, but they dismiss Nestor as imperfect because of his extraordinarily long ears, they consider him a misfit and refuse to take him. They take all the other donkeys for free, leaving Nestor behind. This rejection leads Olaf to banish Nestor from the stable, setting his journey in motion.

Earlier, the animals tease Nestor for his ears, establishing that his unusual feature makes him an outcast.

After Olaf banishes Nestor into the freezing cold, his mother finds him outside and shelters him by lying her body over his to protect him from the harsh weather. She stays in this position through the frigid night and freezes to death. Her sacrifice saves Nestor's life but costs her own.

The harsh treatment of Nestor by Olaf and the other animals foreshadows this tragic moment of loss.

During the sandstorm, Nestor wraps his large ears around Mary to keep her warm as they travel through the harsh desert weather.
