Homeward Bound II: Lost in San Francisco

The Burnford-Seaver family, proud owners of Shadow the Golden Retriever, Ralph Waite as Shadow (voice); Sassy the Himalayan cat, Sally Field as Sassy (voice); and Chance the American Bulldog, Michael J. Fox as Chance (voice), heads north for a family vacation to Canada and decides to bring their three pets along for the journey. At the bustling San Francisco International Airport, chaos erupts when Chance panics, mistaking airport workers for the pound staff he fears. This misunderstanding follows a tense moment that had previously upset Jamie Seaver, Kevin Chevalia as Jamie, pushing Chance to believe he’s being sent back. In a burst of fear, Chance breaks free from his carrier, and Shadow and Sassy instinctively follow, slipping past airport authorities and racing toward the city of San Francisco. Their goal is clear: get home across the vast expanse of the Golden Gate Bridge, with the home front waiting just beyond.

As the trio threads their way through downtown, Chance accidentally crosses paths with two streetwise dogs, a Boxer named Ashcan and his Bullmastiff friend Pete. Ashcan, protective of his turf, refuses to let the newcomers pass, threatening Sassy with harm. Shadow steps in to defend the group, and the tense standoff grows even more dangerous until Riley’s Gang—a rough-and-tumble band of stray animals led by Riley—jumps in to back them up. The gang corners Ashcan and Pete, and explains that their city isn’t a safe place for domesticated pets. Among the chaos, Chance vanishes, prompting Riley to send Delilah, Carla Gugino as Delilah, to find him and discover their visitors’ intentions.

With Delilah and the rest of Riley’s Gang by their side, Shadow and Sassy press on through the park and into the heart of the city. They learn more about Riley’s distrust of humans: he was abandoned as a puppy, which hardened his resolve to protect his gang from people. The group’s dynamics grow warmer as Chance and Delilah share a quiet spark, a sign of budding affection amid the danger and uncertainty. Yet the dream of home remains their north star, and they press forward, hoping to cross the famous bridge and reunite with their family.

Meanwhile, danger revisits them when Ashcan and Pete resume their pursuit. A house fire nearby reveals a perilous moment: a parent’s panic and a backdraft threaten a young boy inside the burning home, along with a kitten. Shadow rushes in through a basement window to rescue the boy, followed closely by Sassy in search of the kitten. The porch collapses in the flames, but Shadow emerges with the boy, the kitten safe in tow, and Sassy rejoins the group. The sight of Shadow’s bravery earns the respect and admiration of Riley and his gang, who vow to help ensure the others find Chance before retreating to their hideout for the night. The next morning, a tense moment arises when Chance begins chewing a tire, and the Blood Red Van appears, driving off with Chance and several other dogs destined for the Lab—a place the gang fears and distrusts.

In a swift, coordinated effort, the animals launch a counterattack to free Chance and the others. They overwhelm the van’s drivers, and when one of the gang, Bando, Stephen Tobolowsky as Bando, hops into the van, he reverses it with purpose and crashes it into the water, ending the threat. The dogs celebrate their hard-won victory, and Delilah weighs in on the possibility that Chance and Delilah may be too different to sustain a relationship. Yet Chance’s feelings for Delilah remain strong, and a mix of frustration and hope pushes him to reconnect with his companions. Riley agrees to guide Shadow and Sassy toward the Golden Gate Bridge, offering careful counsel and protection along the way. Just before they reach the bridge, Ashcan and Pete reappear for another confrontation, but Chance joins Shadow and Sassy in fending them off, proving that their bond can endure even the fiercest challenges.

Together, the reunited trio—Shadow, Sassy, and Chance—cross the iconic Golden Gate Bridge and finally reach their worried family. The Burnford-Seaver family returns home with their three pets, safe and sound, though Chance remains a bit saddened by what he perceives as a lost chance at happiness with Delilah. That sadness gives way to a heartwarming moment when Delilah herself arrives at the family picnic, her fate aligned with theirs once more. Bob Seaver, Robert Hays as Bob Seaver, welcomes the prospect of expanding the family, and the Seavers celebrate with a meal together, the pets tucked in close and the warmth of a family bond restored.
