In a post-apocalyptic world ten years after a catastrophic global economic collapse, the Australian outback has transformed into a harsh and unforgiving wasteland. Life has become a struggle, where lawlessness reigns and crime and poverty are rampant, with only small military units attempting to enforce a semblance of order amidst the chaos. This dynamic sets the stage for a thrilling and tragic tale of survival and vengeance.

The film kicks off with a botched robbery led by the dangerous trio of Archie (David Field), Caleb (Tawanda Manyimo), and Henry (Scoot McNairy). Their plans go awry, forcing them to flee the scene and leaving behind Henry’s injured brother, Rey (Robert Pattinson). As they make their escape, the tensions simmer between the men: Archie ridicules Rey’s incapacity to fend for himself, fueling an angry confrontation with Henry that leads to a crash. Injuries begin to mount, as Henry suffers a gunshot wound to the foot, complicating their predicament.

With their vehicle trapped in debris and their options dwindling, Archie takes a drastic measure. He steals the truck of Eric (Guy Pearce), a forlorn loner who has been drowning his sorrows at a nearby bar. Eric doesn’t take kindly to the theft; upon discovering his car is being taken, he chases after the fleeing bandits. However, the situation escalates quickly, as a brief fight ends with Eric being knocked out cold by Henry.

Meanwhile, Rey’s desperation intensifies. Despite being gravely wounded, he manages to survive the shootout at the robbery site, commandeering a military Humvee to drive towards the nearest town, all while battling his injuries and dizziness. His plight parallels that of Eric, who, upon awakening, embarks on a quest through town searching for his car and the three men who took it.

Eric’s search leads him to an opium den, where he encounters a motley crew including a dwarf and two Chinese acrobats. In a moment reflecting his growing impatience and desperation, Eric eliminates the dwarf to procure a gun, finding himself slipping deeper into violence. After further confrontations, including a tense exchange with the den’s owner, he unexpectedly reunites with Rey, who faints from his injuries shortly after their meeting.

In a crucial turn of events, Eric takes Rey to Doctor Dorothy Peeples (Susan Prior), who operates a makeshift clinic while caring for abandoned dogs. This encounter reveals Eric’s soft side as he shows interest in the doctor’s compassion towards the animals. However, the respite is short-lived. Soon, Eric becomes embroiled in a bloody confrontation when members of the circus seek revenge for the dwarf’s death. Chaos erupts, leading to Eric proving his mettle once again as he battles adversaries.

The plot thickens as Eric and Rey find themselves holed up in a desolate motel. Here, a series of unfortunate events unfold when Rey, while trying to defend himself, accidentally kills the motel owner’s daughter, an act that leads to further bloodshed and violence. Eric, returning just in time, becomes Rey’s unlikely savior, taking out the attacking soldiers and ensuring their escape.

As the story progresses, Eric’s past come to the forefront when he is apprehended by military personnel and questioned about the murder of his wife. His story unfolds with gritty depth, revealing an embittered soul who struggles with his own demons, as Rey starkly mirrors his struggles with moral choices.

The climax builds tension as Eric and Rey finally track down the gang hiding out in a secluded house. The ultimate showdown occurs, where Eric confronts Archie and Caleb under the weight of gunfire and betrayal. Rey’s confrontation with Henry leads to devastating consequences, marking a tragic cycle of violence that leaves Rey lifeless and Eric with a sense of unquenchable sorrow.

In an emotionally haunting conclusion, Eric’s motivations are unveiled; the pursuit of his stolen car was driven not only by a desire for revenge but also by his grief over the loss of his beloved dog, hidden within the trunk. The film closes as Eric prepares to lay his dog to rest, encapsulating the heart-wrenching reality of loss in a world where humanity struggles against its darker instincts.
