In a post-apocalyptic world ravaged by a deadly plant-based virus, humanity faces a terrifying fate as it transforms individuals into resilient, zombie-like creatures. In this bleak setting, we meet Ethan, a young man grappling with severe headaches and profound memory loss, who harbors a burning desire to find his missing girlfriend, Emma. Before the chaos unfolded, Emma, a dedicated ER doctor, had tried to escape with Ethan to the safety of a remote cabin, but she soon vanished without a trace.

Ethan’s journey takes a perilous turn when he encounters armed strangers who attack him, leading to a chaotic escape. Fortunately, he is rescued by Mae, a fierce survivalist who leads him to her isolated farm. Though Mae initially appears tough and unapproachable, she harbors a deep sense of care for Ethan as he desperately seeks out Emma. As he begins to adjust to his new surroundings, Ethan frequently ventures out from the safety of the farm, including a haunting visit to the abandoned cabin where instead of finding Emma, he discovers a scared woman and her teenage son.

As Ethan’s fragmented memories start resurfacing, he is faced with a chilling revelation: he is already infected by the virus and is in the process of transforming into one of the undead. In a heartbreaking twist, he uncovers the shocking truth that the woman he has been searching for, Emma, is actually Mae herself. Over the years, Mae has maintained Ethan’s fragile humanity by feeding him human flesh from a stream of unsuspecting visitors, ensuring he remains partially human despite his gruesome condition.

Confronted with the dark reality of his existence, Ethan, in a moment of desperation, attempts to end his life by shooting himself in the head. However, he soon learns that, like all those infected, his fate is inescapable; he cannot die. Mae, overwhelmed by their cruel circumstances, confesses that she “can’t do this anymore,” ultimately sacrificing herself in a tragic end by allowing Ethan to consume her. In the final, ambiguous moments of the film, the two emerge from the wreckage, hand in hand, walking into the sunset, leaving their future shrouded in uncertainty and despair as the horrors of their new world loom around them.
