Alex Bernier is introduced into a secretive group of priests known as the Carolingians. This initiation marks the beginning of his journey into the mysterious and esoteric practices of this clandestine order.

Following the leader's death, Alex is sent to Rome by a fellow priest, Driscoll. This assignment is crucial, as uncovering the truth behind the death could have significant implications for the Order.

In his investigation, Alex learns about the Sin Eater, a supernatural being capable of granting absolution to the unworthy. The current Sin Eater is revealed to have existed since the Renaissance, adding an ancient layer to the mystery.

Seeking assistance, Alex reconnects with his old friend, Father Thomas Garrett. Together, they navigate the complex world of the Carolingians and the powers at play, hoping to find the Sin Eater.

Father Thomas meets a mysterious hooded figure who claims to lead a pagan cult in Rome. This figure provides clues on how to locate the Sin Eater, escalating the tension in their search.

At St. Peter's Cathedral, Alex finally meets the Sin Eater, William Eden. During their encounter, Eden recounts his own history and reveals the intricate rituals involved in being a Sin Eater.

As Alex becomes more entwined with the Sin Eater's realm, he struggles with his growing feelings for Mara. This emotional conflict leads him to reconsider his priestly vows as he contemplates a different path.

Eden, viewing Mara as an obstacle to Alex's acceptance of the Sin Eater's role, ruthlessly eliminates her. This tragic event unleashes a wave of sorrow and anger in Alex, propelling him toward revenge.
